2007 Women's Outdoor Track & Field Season Recap

The Emory University Women's Track and Field Team concluded the 2007 season by sending two athletes to the NCAA National Championship meet, following a successful showing at the University Athletic Association Championship meet and a number of impressive performances during the year.

Emory was represented at the NCAA Division III National Championships by senior Ashley DeMarco and sophomore Jordan Beall.  DeMarco earned All-America honors for her eighth-place finish in the heptathlon, scoring a school-record 4,677 points in the event.  While competing in the high jump portion of the heptathlon, DeMarco recorded a school-record height of 1.71 meters.  Beall finished 15th in the long jump, recording a distance of 5.31 meters.

The Eagles finished third at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship Meet during the 2007 season, placing an athlete in the top-three finishers in 13 of the 21 events.  DeMarco led the way for the Eagles, scoring 32 of the team's 181.50 points, including first-place finishes in the high jump and 100-meter hurdles.  Beall set a new school and conference record in the high jump at the meet, launching herself 5.70 meters, .15 meters farther than the previous school record.  For her performance, Beall was named the UAA's Most Outstanding Performer for field events.  The Eagles performed well in the distance events as well, as Amy DiBianca took first in the 5,000-meter run, with Melissa Jones finishing just behind her in third place, and junior Lauren Shores claimed the UAA title in the 1,500-meter run.  Rounding out the school's individual champions was Jane Ukandu, who successfully defended her UAA Championship in the 200-meter dash.  All together, 14 Emory athletes earned 21 All-Conference honors following the championship meet, while picking up the school's 15th top-three conference finish in the 20 years of UAA competition.

Emory runners continued to climb the school record books during the year.  DiBianca's season-best time of 17:35.60 in the 5,000-meter run is the fifth-fastest time in school history, while Jones' time of 17:36.41 is the sixth-fastest.  Junior pole vaulter Tracy Whittaker recorded two heights of 3.20 meters during the season, the fourth-best mark by an Eagle.  DeMarco's season-best time of 14.77 in the 100-meter hurdles at the National Championships is the sixth-fastest time in school history.  DeMarco will also end her Emory career with 10 of the top-20 Emory heights in the high jump.
