Athletes of the Week

(Apr. 21) Emory University's Jordan Beall, Tracy Whittaker, and Rebecca Willett each recorded a first-place finish for the Eagles at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship meet this weekend.  Beall finished atop the standings in the long jump, recording a distance of 5.49 meters, a season-best mark for the junior.  Whittaker finished first in the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.35 meters, matching a school-record in the event.  Willett finished first in the 800-meter dash, recording times of 2:20.75 in the event's finals, and 2:19.14 in the preliminary round.  The trio helped the Eagles score 116.50 points during the meet, good for a third-place finish.


(Apr. 14) Emory University's Jordan Beall recorded a season-best distance in the long jump, while competing at the Solid Orange Classic at Clemson University (S.C.).  Beall's mark of 5.29 meters in the event was not only her longest of the outdoor season, but also the second-longest by a University Athletic Association (UAA) competitor this season.  The junior also ran the third leg of the Eagles' 4x100-meter relay team, which finished second with a time of 49.16 seconds. 


(Apr. 7) Emory University's Rebecca Willett set a personal-best time in the 800-meter run, while competing at the Duke Asics Invitational.  Her time of 2:15.12 in the event was the sixth-fastest time in school history, and good for a 19th-place finish, while facing mostly Division I competition.  In addition, the junior's mark was just .12 seconds shy of a provisional qualifying time. 


(Mar. 31) Emory University's Lauren Shores recorded a first-place finish in the 1,500-meter run at the Emory Asics Classic.  Shores finished the race in a time of 4:47.67, three seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.  The senior also recorded a ninth-place finish in the 800-meter run in a season-best time of 2:23.79.  Shores' performance helped the Eagles to a third-place team finish at the meet.


(Mar. 24) The Emory University 4x100-meter relay team of freshman Alisha Reynolds, sophomore Brittany Donino, junior Jordan Beall, and freshman Jami Edwards narrowly missed an NCAA provisional qualifying time while competing at the Emory Invitational.  The squad's time of 48.81 seconds was just .16 seconds shy of the qualifying mark, and good for a third-place finish in the event.  In addition, Edwards recorded a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash and a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash, Beall finished third in the long jump, and Donino claimed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles.  The group's performances helped the Eagles to a third-place finish out of 18 teams at the meet. 


(Mar. 17) Emory University's Jami Edwards earned the first all-American honor of her career, finishing seventh in the 55-meter dash at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships.  Jami recorded a time of 7.23 seconds in the event's finals to record the seventh-place finish.  The freshman's mark of 7.18 seconds in the preliminary rounds of the race set a new school record for the 55-meter dash.  Edwards becomes the second Eagle to earn all-America honors in the 55-meter dash, and the first Emory indoor track all-American since the 1998 season.


(Mar. 13) Emory University freshman Jami Edwards set a University Athletic Association (UAA) record at the Championship Meet, en route to being named the Association's Rookie of the Year.  Edwards broke the UAA record in the 55-meter dash, running a time of 7.19 seconds.  The freshman also finished second in the 200-meter dash finals with a time of 26.29.  Edwards helped the Eagles to a third-place finish at the meet.


(Mar. 3) Emory University's Brittany Donino recorded the fastest 55-meter hurdle time by a University Athletic Association (UAA) runner this season, while competing at the Sewanee Indoor Invitational.  The sophomore, who finished third in the 55-meter hurdles, finished in a time of 8.63 seconds, a personal-best time and just eight-hundredths of a second shy of the provisional qualifying mark.  Donino also recorded a mark of 4.91 meters in the long jump, finishing sixth in the event.  Her performance paced the Eagles to a third-place finish out of 11 teams at the meet.


(Feb. 25) Emory University's Jami Edwards broke her own school record in the 60-meter dash while competing at the Kent State Tune-Up.  The freshman recorded a mark of 7.80 seconds in the preliminary round, and 7.79 seconds in the finals, both provisional qualifying times and school records.  Edwards, who finished fifth in the event, holds the top-eight 60-meter dash times in school history.


(Feb. 18) Emory University distance runner Lauren Shores finished second in the 5,000-meter run, while competing against a number of higher-division runners at the Clemson Tiger Indoor Invitational.  The senior co-captain recorded a time of 17:50.54, the fastest time by a UAA runner this season by more than 27 seconds.  The mark was the second-fastest of Shores' career.


(Feb. 11) Emory University's Brittany Donino recorded three top-10 finishes while competing at the 2008 Tiger Indoor Invitational in Sewanee, Tenn.  Donino finished second in the 55-meter hurdles, setting a new career-best time of 8.89 seconds in the event.  Her second personal-best mark of the day came in the long jump, where the sophomore recorded a distance of 5.13 meters, good for a fifth-place finish.  She rounded out her career-day with her third career-best mark, a time of 7.57 seconds in the 55-meter dash, finished ninth in the event.  Donino scored 10 of Emory's 29 points at the meet, helping the 10th-ranked Eagles to a sixth-place finish out of 13 teams.


(Feb. 4) Senior Tracy Whittaker set an Emory University indoor track and field record in the pole vault, while competing at the Texas Roadhouse Carolina Classic.  Facing mostly Division I competition, Whittaker finished eighth in the pole vault, clearing a school-record height of 3.40 meters.  The event marked the third time during the season that the senior has cleared a height of 3.20 meters or higher.


(Jan. 28) Emory University's Lauren Shores turned in two of the top mile times of her career while competing at the Captains' Invitational at Christopher Newport University (Va.).  Shores ran the mile leg of the Eagles' distance medley relay team, leading the team to a first-place finish with a time of 5:09  for her portion of the race.  The senior returned to win the individual mile run, claiming the top-spot in the event with a time of 5:12.75.


(Jan. 21) Emory University's Jami Edwards recorded two of the fastest times in school history while running at the Niswonger Invitational.  Edwards ran a time of 7.96 seconds in the 60-meter dash, just a tenth of a second slower than her school-record time.  The freshman then recorded the eighth-fastest time in Emory history in the 200-meter dash, finishing the event in a time of 26.41 seconds.  Competing against a large number of Division I runners, Edwards finished 32nd in the 60-meter dash, and 44th in the 200-meter dash.


(Dec. 3) Emory University freshman Jami Edwards set a school record in the 60-meter dash while competing at the Clemson Opener.  Running in her first collegiate race, Edwards recorded a school-record time of 7.86 seconds in the 60-meter dash (just two hundredths of a second shy of a provisional qualifying time), finishing 22nd overall.  She finished her performance at the meet by recording the third-fastest time in Emory history in the 200-meter dash, finishing 28th in the race with a mark of 26.52 seconds.
