An infusion of talented young runners into a program with a
number of veteran athletes proved to be a successful formula for
the Emory University Women's Indoor Track and Field team during the
2007-08 season.
Freshman sprinter Jami Edwards made an immediate
impact on the team during her first season. She finished
seventh in the 55-meter dash at the NCAA Division III
Championships, becoming the first Emory all-American since the 1998
season. Edwards was Emory's lone representative at the
National Meet, scoring two points for the Eagles, good for a
61st-place finish.
The Eagles finished third out of seven teams at the University
Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, marking the
fourth-consecutive year that Emory has finished third or better at
the meet. Emory had two individuals earn UAA Championships,
as Edwards finished first in the 55-meter dash in a meet-record
time of 7.19 seconds, and Brittany Donino topped
all other competitors in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.57
seconds. Emory's second-place finishers at the meet included
Edwards in the 200-meter dash, Rebecca Willett in
the 800-meter run, Lauren Shores in the
3,000-meter run, Tracy Whittaker in the pole
vault, and Jordan Beall in the long jump.
Junior Melissa Jones added third-place finishes in
the 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter runs, to give the Eagles a total of
nine all-UAA honors.
Edwards set two school records during the season, recording a time
of 7.18 seconds in the 55-meter dash at the NCAA Championships, and
a time of 7.78 seconds in the 60-meter dash at the Kent State
Tune-Up, both provisional qualifying times. Emory's other
record setting performance came from Tracy Whittaker, who cleared a
height of 3.40 meters in the pole vault at the Texas Roadhouse
Carolina Classic.
Besides the Eagles' third-place finish at the UAA Championship and
their 61st-place finish at the NCAA Championships, Emory also
recorded a third-place finish at the University of the South
Invitational and a sixth-place finish at the Sewanee Tiger
Invitational.
