Athletes of the Week

(May 26) Emory University's 4x100-meter relay team of senior Jordan Beall, freshmen Monique Osigbeme and Alix Dyer, and junior Mary Crystal Spence finished second at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships.  The squad became the first in school history to break 47 seconds in the event, setting a school-record time of 46.91 seconds, and earning the first all-America honor for a relay team in the program's history.  In addition, Beall finished 14th in the long jump, Osigbeme claimed 12th-place in the 100-meter dash, and Spence finished 12th in the 200-meter dash and 14th in the 100-meter dash.  The team's eight points scored helped Emory to a 33rd-place finish at the NCAA championships.


(May 18) Emory University's Jordan Beall broke her own school record in the long jump, while competing at the Gregory Invitational.  Beall won the long jump with a distance of 5.79 meters, just .01 meters shy of an automatic qualifying time.  The senior was also part of the Eagles' third-place 400-meter relay team, which recorded a provisional qualifying time of 48.56 seconds.  Beall will compete in both events at the NCAA Division III Women's Track and Field Championships.

(May 18) Emory University's Melissa Jones set a school record in the 10,000-meter run, while competing at the Gregory Invitational.  The senior's time of 37:09.59 was good for a NCAA provisional qualifying mark and a second-place finish in the event.  Jones bested her previous school-record time of 37:50.25, set earlier in the season.


(May 11) Emory University's Monique Osigbeme was part of two NCAA provisional qualifying performances while competing at the Orange and Purple Classic in Clemson, SC.  Osigbeme finished 12th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.21 seconds, her fastest of the season and a provisional qualifying mark.  The freshman was also the anchor leg on Emory's 4x100-meter relay team, which finished second in a provisional qualifying time of 47.92 seconds.  Osigbeme rounded out the day with a time of 25.45 seconds in the 200-meter dash, two-tenths of a second shy of a provisional mark.

(May 11) Emory University's Mary Crystal Spence recorded a pair of NCAA provisional qualifying times at the Orange and Purple Classic in Clemson, SC.  Spence finished 22nd in the 200-meter dash with a season-best and provisional qualifying time of 25.18 seconds in the 200-meter dash.  The junior ran the second leg of the Eagles' second-place 4x100-meter relay team, which recorded a provisional time of 47.92 seconds.   Spence also ran a time of 12.36 seconds in the 100-meter dash, just six-hundredths of a second shy of a provisional mark.  She has recorded a provisional qualifying time in three events this season, and helped the Eagles reach a ranking of 25th in Division III during the campaign.


(Apr. 27) Emory University's Melissa Jones won two events while competing at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Track and Field Championships.  Jones opened the meet with a win in the 10,000-meter run, finishing first in a time of 38:28.82.  On the second day of the meet, the senior claimed the top-spot in the 5,000-meter run with a mark of 18:44.61.  Jones was the only Eagle to win two individual events during the meet, helping 14th-ranked Emory to a second-place finish.

(Apr. 27) Emory University's Jordan Beall won two events, and scored in two others, while competing at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Track and Field Championships.  Beall set a track record with a first-place finish provisional qualifying mark of 5.68 meters in the long jump, marking the third-consecutive year she has won the event.  The senior was part of Emory's UAA championship and record-setting 4x100-meter relay team, which finished in a provisional qualifying time of 47.55 seconds.  Beall also earned all-UAA honors with a second-place finish in the javelin throw (34.69 meters), and finished sixth in the 100-meter dash (13.65 seconds).  She scored 23.5 points for Emory during the meet, helping the Eagles to a second-place finish.


(Apr. 20) Emory University's Mary Crystal Spence recorded NCAA provisional qualifying times in two events at the Bulldog Limited.  Spence's time of 12.30 seconds in the 100-meter dash, her best of the season, was good for a fifth-place finish and a provisional qualifying time.  The junior also recorded a provisional qualifying time as the anchor leg of the Eagles' 4x100-meter relay team, which finished second in a time of 47.83 seconds.  Rounding out the day, Spence was part Emory's first-place 4x400-meter relay team, which finished with a mark of 3:58.73.  Spence's performance has helped the Eagles reach a national ranking of 10th this season.


(Apr. 13) Emory University's Monique Osigbeme finished the 100-meter dash in a NCAA provisional qualifying time, while competing at the Ole Miss Invitational.  Osigbeme's time of 12.22 seconds was the sixth-fastest mark in school history, and good for a 26th-place finish in the event, the best by a Division III runner.  The freshman also recorded a 45th-place finish in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line with a time of 26.00 seconds.


(Apr. 6) Emory University's Lauren Attiah set a school-record with a provisional qualifying distance in the triple jump, while competing at the Gem of the Hills Invitational.  Attiah reached a distance of 11.40 meters in the event, surpassing the previous school record by more than half a meter and finishing sixth overall.  The freshman also finished fifth in the long jump with a distance of 5.46 meters, just one hundredth of a meter shy of a provisional qualifying distance.  Attiah's performance helped the Eagles to a ninth-place finish out of 18 teams at the meet.


(Mar. 30) Emory University's Sara Gelb recorded a personal-best time in the 800-meter dash, while competing at the Emory University Classic.  The freshman's time of 2:22.33 was good for a second-place finish in the event, and the fastest time run by an Emory athlete this outdoor season.  Gelb's performance helped the Eagles finish second at the meet, which was cut short by rain.


(Mar. 23) Emory University's women's 4x100-meter relay team, comprised of senior Jordan Beall freshmen Monique Osigbeme and Alix Dyer, and junior Mary Crystal Spence set a school record and provisional qualifying time while competing at the Emory University Invitational.  The squad recorded a time of 47.66 seconds, the fastest by a Division III team this season, and breaking the previous school record by .84 seconds.  The relay finished second out of six teams, scoring eight points and helping Emory to a third-place finish at the meet.


(Mar. 16) Emory University's Jordan Beall earned all-America honors in the long jump, while competing at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships last weekend.  Beall recorded a distance of 5.48 meters in the event, good for a fifth-place finish.  She became the sixth all-American in the history of the Emory women's indoor track and field program, and the first in a field event.  Beall, the 2009 UAA long jump champion and school-record holder in the event, scored four points for the Eagles, helping the team to a 39th-place finish at the meet.


(Mar. 9) Emory University's Monique Osigbeme recorded a NCAA provisional qualifying time while winning the UAA Championship in the 55-meter dash.  Osigbeme finished first in the event in a time of 7.30 seconds, matching the eighth-fastest mark in school history.  The freshman also finished second in the 200-meter dash with a school-record time of 25.42 seconds.  Her performance helped the Eagles finish second at the UAA Championships.

(Mar. 9) Emory University freshman Alix Dyer took home the UAA Championship in the 400-meter dash during the conference championship meet.  Dyer finished first in the event with a time of 58.26 seconds, good for a NCAA provisional qualifying time and a school record.  She also finished second as part of the Eagles' 4x400-meter relay team, which recorded a time of 4:01.18, also a school-record time.  Dyer's performance helped Emory finish second at the UAA Championship meet.

(Mar. 9) Emory University's Jordan Beall won the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship in the long jump while competing at the conference-championship meet.  Beall won the event with a distance of 5.46 meters, good for her third NCAA provisional qualifying mark of the season in the long jump.  The senior co-captain also finished sixth in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.56 seconds in the preliminaries, and 7.69 in the finals.  Beall's performance helped the Eagles finish second at the meet.


(Mar. 2) Emory University's Monique Osigbeme recorded a first-place finish in the 55-meter dash, while competing at the Sewanee Indoor Invitational.  Osigbeme ran a time of 7.33 seconds in the finals of the event, finishing a tenth of a second ahead of the second-place competitor.  In the preliminaries of the 55-meter dash, the freshman recorded a mark of 7.31 seconds, just a hundredth of a second shy of a NCAA provisional qualifying mark, and the fastest time by an UAA runner this season.  Osigbeme's performance helped the Eagles to a first-place finish at the meet.


(Feb. 23) Emory University's Katie Sheehan provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Indoor Pentathlon Championships, while competing at the Ohio Wesleyan University Pentathlon.  Sheehan scored a total of 3,021 points in the multi-event, finishing first among seven Division III women.  The senior recorded marks of 9.05 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles, 1.52 meters in the high jump, 8.80 meters in the shot put, 4.95 meters in the long jump, and 2:36.25 in the 800-meter run.


(Feb. 16) Emory University's Alix Dyer recorded two of the fastest times in school history while competing in the 400- and 200-meter dashes at the Valentine Invitational.  Dyer set a new personal-best time in the 400-meter dash, finishing 27th-overall with a mark of 59.19 seconds, the second-fastest indoor time in school history.  The freshman also recorded the sixth-fastest time in school history in the 200-meter dash, finishing 38th with a personal-best time of 26.13 seconds.


(Feb. 9) Emory University's Jordan Beall set a school record in the long jump while competing at the Tiger Indoor Invitational in Sewanee, TN.  Beall reached a provisional qualifying distance of 5.58 meters in the event, besting a 12-year old school indoor track record by .18 meters.  The senior co-captain also finished 13th in the 55-meter dash in a career-best time of 7.71 seconds.  Beall's performance helped the Eagles finish fifth out of nine teams at the meet at first among non-Division I schools.

(Feb. 9) Emory University's Lauren Attiah recorded a provisional qualifying mark while competing at the Tiger Indoor Invitational in Sewanee, TN.  Attiah finished third in the triple jump, besting her own school record in the event with a provisional qualifying distance of 11.43 meters.  In the long jump, the freshman finished fourth with a career-best distance of 5.38 meters.  Attiah's performance helped the Eagles finish fifth out of nine teams at the meet, and first among non-Division I schools.


(Feb. 2) Emory University's Rebecca Willett finished first in the unseeded 800-meter run, while competing at the Niswonger Invitational.  Willett's time of 2:21.43 was the best by a Division III runner at the meet, and, including the seeded heat, the sixth-best time overall.  Competing in her first meet of the season, the senior bested all 67 unseeded runners in the event.


(Jan. 19) Emory University freshman Lauren Attiah bested her school-record distance in the triple jump at the Appalachian State University Open.  Competing in just her second collegiate meet, Attiah recorded a distance of 11.37 meters in the triple jump, currently the sixth-best performance in Division III this season.  She also recorded a jump of 5.33 meters in the long jump, the second-best performance in school history and good for a seventh-place finish.


(Dec. 8) Emory University's Lauren Attiah recorded an NCAA provisional qualifying mark and a school indoor record in the triple jump during the Holiday Open at Christopher Newport University.  Competing in her first collegiate meet, Attiah finished sixth in the triple jump, recording a distance of 11.18 meters, good for an NCAA ‘B' cut.  The freshman was also Emory's top finisher in the high jump, taking 12th-place with a height of 1.53 meters, and was the second-best Eagle performer with a distance of 5.03 meters in the long jump.
