With one of the top groups of sprinters in Division III, and a
number of reliable distance runners and field competitors, the
Emory University women's outdoor track and field team enjoyed a
banner campaign in 2009.
Highlighting the season for the Eagles was the performance of their
4x100-meter relay team of senior Jordan Beall,
freshman Alix Dyer, freshman Monique
Osigbeme, and junior Mary Crystal
Spence. At the 2009 NCAA Division III Championships,
the quartet finished second in a school-record time of 46.91
seconds, becoming the first relay in the program's history to earn
all-America honors.
Also qualifying and participating in the NCAA Championship Meet
individually were freshman Lauren Attiah
(10th in the triple jump), Beall (14th in the
long jump), Osigbeme (12th in the 100-meter dash), and
Spence (12th in the 200-meter dash and 14th
in the 100-meter dash). Senior Melissa Jones
provisionally qualified for the 10,000-meter run, but was not
selected to compete at the NCAA Championships.
The Eagles scored 169.50 points at the University Athletic
Association (UAA) Championships, good for a second-place finish at
the meet, the team's best finish since the 2006 season.
Freshman Alix Dyer earned UAA Rookie of the Year honors after
finishing first in the 400-meter dash and as part of the Eagles'
4x100-meter relay team, along with Beall, Spence and
Osigbeme. Jones won UAA Championships in both the 5,000-meter
and 10,000-meter runs, while Beall claimed a long jump
championship, and senior Rebecca Willett took
first in the 800-meter run. The Eagles totaled 18 all-UAA
certificates during the meet.
Emory athletes set three other program records during the season,
besides the 4x100-meter relay record. Jones' time of 37:09.59
in the 10,000-meter run at the Gregory Invitational was good for a
school record, while Beall set the program mark in the long jump
(5.79 meters), and Attiah in the triple jump (11.82 meters).
