2009-10 Emory Women's Indoor Track & Field Season Recap

2009-10 Emory Women's Indoor Track & Field Season Recap

The Emory University women’s indoor track and field team finished second in the University Athletic Association (UAA) during the 2009-10 season, and was represented by three of its members at the NCAA Division III Championships.

Emory senior Brittany Donino and sophomore Lauren Attiah each earned all-America honors during at the 2010 NCAA Championships.  Donino finished fifth in the nation in the indoor 55-meter hurdles, recording a personal-best time of 8.30 seconds, the third-fastest mark in school history.  She became the second Emory runner to earn all-America honors in the 55-meter hurdles, joining former Eagle Kahlilah Jennings (1998).  Meanwhile, Attiah became the first woman in the program’s history to earn all-America honors in the triple jump, finishing sixth in the nation with a distance of 11.49 meters.  It marked the first time in 15 years that the Emory women have had multiple all-Americans in the same indoor season, and just the second time overall.

Also competing for Emory was freshman Theresa Ford, who finished 16th in the high jump with a height of 1.56 meters, after setting a school record with a jump of 1.68 meters earlier in the season.  All together, Emory athletes scored seven points at the NCAA Championships, helping the team to a 34th-place finish.

Following the season, Attiah was named the South/ Southeast Region Indoor Field Athlete of the Year by the USTFCCCA, becoming the first Eagle to earn the honor.  Also earning regional honors were coaches John Curtin and Kevin Semanick, who were named the South/ Southeast Region’s Women’s Head and Assistant Coaches of Year, respectively.

Emory finished second at the UAA Championships, scoring 133 total points to finish just 13 behind the first-place University of Chicago.  The Eagles won five individual conference championships, headlined by senior Mary Crystal Spence, who came away with the UAA title in both the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter dash.  Other conference champions included Attiah in the long jump, sophomore Alix Dyer in the 400-meter dash, and Donino, who set a conference-meet record in the 55-meter hurdles.  The Eagles 4x400-meter relay team of Alisha Reynolds, Kaele Leonard, Melanie Levy and Dyer won the conference title as well.

Emory athletes set a number of school records during the course of the campaign, besides Ford’s height in the high jump.  Dyer’s time of 57.78 seconds in the 400-meter dash at the Valentine Invitational was the best in school history, and she now owns nine of the top ten marks in the program’s history in the event.  Also at the Valentine Invitational, Attiah recorded the best triple jump in the program’s history with a mark of 11.65 meters, and the Eagles’ 4x400-meter relay team of Reynolds, Hadiza Sa-Aadu, Levy, and Dyer set a school record time of 3:58.30.  Rounding out the record-setting season, Reynolds ran a program-best time of 1:19.63 in the 500-meter dash.
