2010-11 Season Recap: Emory Women’s Indoor Track & Field

2010-11 Season Recap: Emory Women’s Indoor Track & Field

The Emory University women’s track and field team claimed the second University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Championship in the program’s history in 2011, highlighting an extremely successful winter season for the Eagles.

The UAA Indoor Championship was the first for the Eagles since the 1995 season, despite a very successful run since 2005, during which the team finished second in the conference three times and third three additional times.  Emory finally broke through to win the conference title in 2011, finishing the meet with 119.5 points scored, besting second-place Washington University by 10 points.

Junior Alix Dyer was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Performer, winning conference championships in the 400-meter dash, and as part of the 4x400-meter relay, along with senior Alycia Adams, freshman Gabrielle Clark, and sophomore Kaele Leonard.  Dyer added on a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash.

Adams won an individual conference championship as well, finishing first in the 200-meter dash, while junior Lauren Attiah chipped in with a victory in the long jump. Emory earned 10 all-UAA honors, awarded for a top-three finish at the meet.

Also earning conference recognition was Emory’s coaching staff, led by head coach John Curtin, which was named the UAA Women’s Indoor Coaching Staff of the Year for the first time in the program’s history.  Curtin was later named the South/Southeast Region Head Coach of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for the second-straight year.

The Eagles had one participant at the NCAA Division III Championships, as Attiah competed in the triple jump, finishing ninth in the event.  Her season-best distance of 11.42 meters in the triple jump, set at the North Central College Last Chance Meet, was the sixth-best jump in school history.  Attiah also recorded the fourth-best long jump by an Eagle (5.49 meters at the UAA Championships) and the 10th-best high jump (1.60 meters at the Orange and Purple Classic) during the season.

Other top performances during the year included school records from junior Jasmine McCullough in the 60-meter hurdles (9.60 seconds at the North Central College Last Chance Meet) and from Adams in the 300-meter dash (42.06 seconds at the Orange and Purple Classic).  Dyer’s time of 1:20.51 in the 500-meter dash at the Orange and Purple Classic was the second-best in school history, while junior Tess Gallegos’ time of 10:20.38 in the 3,000-meter run at the UAA Championships ranks seventh all-time in school history, and freshman Rasheika Martin’s shot put of 11.10 meters is the ninth-longest by an Eagle.  In addition, the Eagles’ UAA Championship 4x400-meter relay team crossed the finish line with a time of 4:00.39, the third-fastest time in Emory history.
