2011 Season Recap: Emory Women’s Outdoor Track & Field

2011 Season Recap: Emory Women’s Outdoor Track & Field

Emory University successfully defended its University Athletic Association (UAA) Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship in 2011, winning the conference title for the second-straight year and third-straight season during the campaign.

Emory’s strength during the season was its group of sprinters, four of which were selected to compete at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships.  Emory’s 4x100-meter relay team of junior Jasmine McCullough, senior Alycia Adams, junior Lauren Attiah and junior Alix Dyer finished 11th at the meet with a time of 47.78 seconds, the seventh-fastest time in the program’s history.  In addition, Dyer finished 16th in the 100-meter dash, McCullough claimed 23rd in the 100-meter hurdles, and Attiah took 24th in the triple jump.

The Emory women scored 202.5 points during the UAA Championships, finishing well ahead of second-place Washington University (183.5 points) and third-place Case Western Reserve University (133 points).  The Eagles were led by Dyer, who claimed conference championships individually in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, in addition to being a part of the winning 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays.  All together, Emory athletes totaled UAA Championships in four individual events and two relays, in addition to 18 all-UAA honors in individual events, and three in relays.

For their efforts in helping lead the Eagles to the conference championship, Emory’s coaching staff, led by head coach John Curtin, was named the UAA Coaching Staff of the Year for the seventh time in the women’s outdoor program’s history.  In addition, assistant coach Madeleine Outman was named the South/Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) after the season.

Emory athletes recorded a number of top times during the season, including a school-record setting time of 9:23.29 from the Eagles’ 4x800-meter relay team of freshman Emily Caesar, senior Sabrina Jeppsson, junior Tess Gallegos and sophomore Melanie Frank.  Emory’s 4x100-meter relay team of McCullough, Adams, Attiah and Dyer notched six provisional qualifying marks during the year, including a season-best time of 47.50 seconds, the third-fastest in school history, and three other marks that ranked among the top-10 all-time by an Emory squad.  The Eagles’ 4x400-meter relay team of senior Alisha Reynolds, Adams, sophomore Kaele Leonard and Dyer ran the third-fastest time in school history (3:55.91), good for a provisional mark and one of two top-10 times in Emory history ran by the quartet during the year.

Individually, McCullough recorded two automatic and four provisional times in the 100-meter hurdles during the year, including a mark of 14.45 seconds, the fourth-fastest in Emory history.  Natalie Fenn’s season-best time of 11:08.57 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase ranked seventh in school history, and was one of two provisional times and three top-10 times in the program’s history ran by the senior during the year.  Attiah recorded four provisional marks in the triple jump during the year, including a season-best of 11.70 meters that was the fourth-longest ever by an Eagle.  Additionally, Dyer’s season-best time of 12.20 seconds in the 100-meter dash ranked sixth in school history, Frank’s time of 4:42.97 in the 1,500-meter run was the seventh-best ever by an Eagle, junior Charlotte Diggs’ mark of 1:04.25 in the 400-meter hurdles was the seventh-fastest in Emory history, and sophomore Theresa Ford cleared a season-best height of 1.63 meters in the high jump, tying her for the sixth-best mark by an Eagle.

Other team highlights during the outdoor season included a first-place finish out of 16 teams at the Emory Classic, a second-place finish out of 11 teams at the Emory Invitational, and a sixth-place finish out of 15 teams at the Gem of the Hills Invitational.
