Paced by all-America and conference Most Outstanding Performer
honors during the season from junior Theresa Ford,
the Emory University women’s indoor track and field team
turned in one of its best campaigns in the program’s history
in 2012.
Ford earned an all-America honor in the high jump at the 2012 NCAA
Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships, finishing fourth
in the event after clearing the bar at 1.65 meters. It was
the ninth all-America honor recorded by a member of the Emory
women’s track and field team during the indoor season, and
the first in the high jump. Ford scored all five of the
Eagles’ points during the meet, leading the squad to a
32nd-place finish, the fourth-best in the
program’s history and best national placing by the team since
1998.
Two other athletes represented Emory at the 2012 NCAA
Championships. Senior Lauren Attiah placed
12th in the triple jump, while senior Jasmine
McCullough recorded a 14th-place finish in the
60-meter hurdles.
Emory took second-place at the 2012 UAA Championships, scoring 136
points to finish only behind Washington University (149 points) and
well ahead of the third-place University of Chicago (63
points). Senior Alix Dyer led the Eagles
with UAA Championships in three events, winning the 400-meter dash
in an Emory and UAA record time of 57.28 seconds, the 200-meter
dash in a time of 25.84 seconds, and joining freshman
Debora Adjibaba, sophomore Gabrielle
Clark, and junior Kaele Leonard on the
winning 1,600-meter relay team. Adjibaba also won the
60-meter dash in a UAA-record time of 7.80 seconds and finished
second in the 200-meter dash, en route to becoming the second
women’s athlete in Emory history to be named UAA Indoor Track
and Field Rookie of the Year.
Ford was named the UAA’s Most Outstanding Performer in Field
Events after winning the high jump by clearing the bar at a
school-record height of 1.68 meters, and claiming an individual
title in the long jump with a distance of 5.48 meters. She
was the first Eagle to earn the honor during the indoor season
specifically for her performance in the meet’s field events,
and it marked the seventh time overall an Emory athlete has been
named the UAA Women’s Most Outstanding Performer for an
indoor campaign.
Attiah added Emory’s final UAA Championship of the meet with
a win in the triple jump. Additional all-UAA honors were
claimed by second-place finishes for McCullough in the 60-meter
dash and 60-meter hurdles and Leonard in the 400-meter dash, and
third-place finishes for Attiah in the 200-meter dash, freshman
Emily Mitchell in the long jump, senior
Tess Gallegos in the 5,000-meter run, and the
Eagles’ distance medley relay team of junior Calley
Edwards, Clark, sophomore Emily Caesar
and freshman Stephanie Crane. The Eagles
totaled seven UAA Championships and 15 all-UAA honors at the
conference meet.
In addition to Emory records set in the high jump and 400-meter
dash, a number of other program high-water marks were reached
during the 2011-12 indoor campaign. Twice during the season,
Gallegos broke a five-year old record in the 3,000-meter run,
including an Emory-best mark of 10:07.80 at the UAA
Championships. Crane’s time of 5:01.92 in the mile run
at the NYU D-III Challenge broke former Eagle Angela Davies’
record in the event, which stood since the 2005 campaign.
Attiah broke her own record in the triple jump with a leap of 11.89
meters at the NCC Last Chance Invitational, while McCullough became
the first Eagle to break the nine-second mark in the 60-meter
hurdles with a time of 8.86 seconds at the UAA Championships,
breaking her own record. Emory also saw its two indoor relay
records fall, as the 1,600-meter relay team of Adjibaba, Clark,
Leonard and Dyer set a mark of 3:55.26 at the Vulcan Invitational,
and the all-UAA distance medley relay team set a program record
with a time of 12:05.26 at the conference championships.
For her efforts and achievements during the 2011-12 indoor season,
Emory’s Madeleine Outman was named the
South/ Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year by the
USTFCCCA, marking the second time in school history an Emory coach
has earned the honor for the indoor season.
A number of Emory athletes were recognized for the contributions
in the classroom, in addition to their athletic
accomplishments. Senior Charlotte Diggs,
Ford and Gallegos were each named to the Capital One/ CoSIDA
Academic All-District First Team in 2012.
