2014 Emory Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Season Recap

2014 Emory Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Season Recap

Emory University senior Morgan Monroe, juniors Electra Korn and Debora Adjibaba and freshman Harley Barrera each claimed all-America honors in 2014 to pace the Eagles during the outdoor track and field campaign.

Other highlights from the 2014 outdoor for the Emory Women’s Track and Field team include a 39th-place finish out of 81 scoring teams at the NCAA Division III Championships, four broken program records, and a third-place finish at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, which included a Most Valuable Performer honor for Korn.

Emory athletes combined to score seven points and set three program records at the 2014 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.  The Eagles’ 4x100-meter relay team recorded the squad’s top finish of the meet, as Barrera, Korn, Monroe and Adjibaba placed sixth to score six points.  Individual all-American finishes came from Adjibaba in the 100-meter dash (seventh), Monroe in the 100-meter hurdles (eighth-place) and Korn in the 400-meter dash (eighth-place).  Both Adjibaba and Monroe set Emory records in the preliminaries of their events, with Adjibaba registering a time of 11.90 seconds in the prelims of the 100-meter dash (becoming the first Emory woman to break the 12-second barrier in the race) and Monroe recording a mark of 14.16 seconds in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles.

Korn added the third record-setting performance of the meet, finishing 11th in the preliminaries of the 400-meter hurdles to best her own record time (set earlier in the year) with a mark of 1:01.78 seconds.  Senior Meredith Lorch made her debut appearance in the NCAA Championships, qualifying for the finals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase and finishing ninth overall with a personal-best time of 10:52.76.

The Eagles’ fourth program-record setting performance came earlier in the season, when junior Stephanie Crane recorded a time of 5:02.84 in the mile run (which is more commonly run during the indoor season) at the Blue Shoes Collegiate Track and Field Meet at Furman University.

At the 2014 UAA Championships, the Eagles totaled 155 points, finishing in third place behind first-place Washington University (211 points) and the second-place University of Chicago (201.5 points).  It marked the 11th-straight top-three finish for the Eagles, and their 24th overall top-three finish in the history of UAA competition.  Emory athletes combined to win five individual events and one relay, while amassing 13 all-UAA honors for top-three finishes in events.

Korn paced the Eagles at the meet and was named the UAA Most Valuable Performer for Running Events, after becoming just the second woman in 27 years of conference meets to win both the 400-meter dash and the 400-meter hurdles (along with Washington’s Alli Alberts in 2009).  Korn also teamed with Barrera, Monroe and Adjibaba to win the 4x100-meter relay, while Adjibaba (100-meter dash) and Monroe (100-meter hurdles) each claimed individual titles.  In addition, junior Ulrica Tull claimed the UAA Championship in the hammer throw, becoming the first Eagle to win the event since 2002.

In other scored collegiate meets during the season, the Eagles came away win at the 13-team Emory Classic, a second-place finish out of seven teams at the Mountain Laurel Invitational (hosted by the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee) and a fifth-place finish out of 25 teams at the Emory Invitational.  Emory finished the regular season ranked second in the South/Southeast Region.

In addition to the athletic honors, Monroe, Adjibaba and Korn were each named to the Capital One Academic All-District Team as well in 2014 for their academic success.
