2013-14 Women’s Indoor Track & Field Season Recap

2013-14 Women’s Indoor Track & Field Season Recap

The 2013-14 indoor campaign proved to be a historic one for the Emory University Women’s Track and Field team, as the Eagles set program records in six different events, and finished tied for 23rd-place out of 61 teams at the 2014 NCAA Division III Championships.

Three Eagles – senior Morgan Monroe and juniors Debora Adjibaba and Electra Korn – claimed all-America honors at the 2014 NCAA Championships.  Monroe finished eighth in the 60-meter hurdles to earn a point towards the Eagles’ team total, after running a school-record time of 8.79 seconds in the preliminaries of the event.  Korn broke the school-record in the 400-meter dash twice during the meet, including a mark of 56.44 seconds to finish sixth in the finals of the event to add another three points for Emory.  In the 60-meter dash, Adjibaba broke the school record in the preliminaries with a time of 7.61 seconds, eventually finishing fifth in the finals to cap off the Eagles’ scoring with another four points.  It marked the third career indoor all-America honor of Adjibaba’s career, tying her with former Eagle Theresa Ford for the most in school history.

The three individual all-America honors claimed by the Eagles at the meet were the second-most ever by an Emory squad at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Adjibaba also broke the school record in the 200-meter dash at the NCAA Championships, running a time of 25.06 seconds to finish in 12th-place in the preliminaries.  In addition, she was a part of Emory’s program-record setting distance medley relay team, along with junior Stephanie Crane, sophomore Julie Williamson and senior Emily Caesar, which finished ninth in the preliminaries at the NCAA Championships with a time of 11:51.85.

Adjibaba broke one other school record during the season, running a time of 7.16 seconds in the 55-meter dash at the 2014 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships.  She was selected as the South/Southeast Region Indoor Track Athlete of the Year by the USTFCCCA, becoming the first Eagle ever to earn the award.

Emory finished second at the UAA Championships, hosted by Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, scoring 103.5 points to edge out third-place Washington University (Mo.) by half a point.  The University of Chicago won the meet with a score of 140 points.  The Eagles won four events at the conference championships, and collected a total of 11 all-UAA honors.

Adjibaba was named the UAA Most Outstanding Performer for Running Events, marking the ninth time an Eagle has earned conference Most Outstanding Performer honors during the indoor season.  She won the UAA Championship in both the 55-meter dash (breaking the conference record in the event with her time of 7.16 seconds) and the 200-meter dash at the meet, in addition to claiming all-UAA honors with a second-place finish as a part of Emory’s 4x400-meter relay team.  Adding individual event wins for the Eagles were Korn in the 400-meter dash and Monroe in the 55-meter hurdles.

Highlights from the regular season for the Eagles included a fourth-place finish out of 18 teams at the second-annual Emory Crossplex Invitational, hosted by Emory at the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Alabama.

In addition to the athletic honors, Monroe received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship for her work both on the track and in the classroom, becoming just the ninth member of the Emory track and field program (men and women) to win the prestigious honor.  Monroe, Adjibaba and Korn were each named to the Capital One Academic All-District Team as well in 2014.
