The Emory University women's track and field team saw a number of standout performances from both veterans and newcomers to buoy a successful outdoor campaign in 2015.
The Eagles' athletes recorded 10 individual marks during the season that ranked among the top-10 in their respective events in the program's history, including four of the top-10 times in the 800-meter run by junior Julie Williamson. Her time of 2:12.45 in the 800-meter run at the Georgia Invitational was the second-best mark ever recorded by an Eagle in the event. Other top-10 times every by an Emory competitor included a pair from senior Marissa Gogniat in the 1,500-meter run, one from senior Hannah Smith in the 3,000-meter run and two in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, and one from freshman Kora Dreffs in the shot put. Emory finished the season ranked second in the South/ Southeast Region by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The Eagles were represented at the NCAA Division III Championships by Smith, who made the first national appearance of her career, competing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The senior placed 17th in the event at the meet.
Emory played host to the 2015 University Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships, finishing third out of the seven teams with 138 points scored during the meet. It marked the 12th-consecutive season that the Eagles have finished third or better at the conference outdoor championships, and the 25th time in the 28 years of UAA competition.
A pair of Eagles claimed individual UAA Championships during the meet. Smith won the 3,000-meter steeplechase, becoming just the fourth Emory woman to ever win the event at the conference championships. Freshman Caitlin Cheeseboro, who was later named the UAA Rookie of the Year, won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.92 seconds, breaking the 15-second mark in the event for the first time in her career.
Emory added on an addition seven additional all-UAA finishes, including second-place finishes from freshman Erica Goldman in the 400-meter dash, Williamson in the 800-meter run, senior Hannah Parra in the 400-meter hurdles, senior Madison Hoeninghausen in the javelin throw, and senior Katie Wilson in the high jump. Claiming third-place finishes were freshman Julia Leventhal in the 100-meter dash and the Eagles' 4x800-meter relay team of freshman Gabrielle Stravach, freshman Halle Markel, senior Stephanie Crane and Williamson.
Earlier in the year, Emory set a new program record in the 4x800-meter relay, with Gognait, Crane, sophomore Alexa Young and Williamson notching a time of 9:14.64 at the team's season-opening Emory Invitational in March. The Eagles ended up placing third out of 27 teams at the meet.
In other scored meets during the season, Emory finished second out of 24 teams at the Emory Classic, fifth out of 16 teams at the Catamount Classic, and second out of seven teams at the Sewanee Mountain Laurel Invitational.
In addition to their achievements on the track during the season, both senior Electra Korn and Williamson were named to the Capital One / CoSIDA Academic All-District Team in 2014-15. It marked the second-straight year that Korn has received the honor, and the first career Academic All-District honor for Williamson.
