2016 Women's Outdoor Track & Field Season Recap

2016 Women's Outdoor Track & Field Season Recap

Building off their success of the indoor season, the 4x400m Relay team helped the Emory University Women's Track & Field team to a 51st place finish at the 2016 NCAA Division III Championships at Wartburg College in Waverly, IA, marking the fourth time the Eagles have scored at the meet in the last five seasons.

The quartet of sophomores Julia Leventhal, Erica Goldman and freshmen Dilys Osei and Ariana Newhouse earned a fourth place finish in the event at nationals with a school-record time of 3:45.92. They are just the second 4x400m Relay team to collect All-America honors in Emory history, joining the 2012 team of Debora Adjibaba, Lauren Attiah, Alix Dyer, and Kaele Leonard who placed third.

Senior Julie Williamson followed up her ninth place showing in the 800m at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships to finished 13th in the outdoor event with a time of 2:11.94. It was the second time she qualified for the outdoor championships in her career and the first time since her freshman season where she was part of the 4x400m Relay team.

After back-to-back third place showings at the University Athletic Association Championships in 2014 and 2015, the Eagles finished in second place at the 2016 Championships at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, being edged out by the host school by a score of 221-173. Emory tallied three event championships and 14 All-UAA, 12 individual and two relays, finishes at the meet with Newhouse taking home UAA Rookie of the Year honors.

Newhouse medaled in two events at the meet including a UAA championship in the 400m Dash, breaking the school record with a time of 55.71. She added a second place showing in the 200m Dash with a time of 25.65.

Also winning event titles for the Eagles were senior Alexandra Aiello in the long jump and freshman Dani Bland in the 100m Dash. Aiello registered a mark 5.31m in the event while Bland bested three other Eagles including third-place finisher Leventhal in the event with a time of 12.21.

Tallying All-UAA honors at the meet to go along with Aiello, Bland and Newhouse were seniors Khadijah Sayyid (3rd, 200m Dash), Williamson (3rd, 800m Run), junior Alexa Young (2nd, 4x800m Relay), sophomores Goldman (2nd, 400m Dash), Leventhal (2nd, 4x100m Relay and 3rd in 100m Dash), Gabrielle Stravach (2nd, 4x800m Relay and 3rd in 1500m Run), freshmen Kayla O'Shea (2nd, 4x800m Relay), Osei (2nd in both 100m Hurdles and 4x100m Relay), Clare Ubersax (2nd, 4x800m Relay) and Paris Wagner (3rd, Discus).

The Eagles, as was the case during the indoor season, were well represented on the USTFCCCA South/Southeast All-Region list with Head Coach John Curtin being named the regional Coach of the Year with 13 athletes earning All-Region honors across 14 different events. Osei led the team with four All-Region certificates earning kudos in the 100m Hurdles, 400m Hurdles, 4x100m and 4x400m Relay events.

In addition to the 4x400m Relay team and Newhouse setting school records in 2016, three other top marks fell during competition. Williamson posted the four fastest 800m Run times in consecutive times on the track in May with her setting the new top mark of 2:10.71 at the Gregory Invitational. A week prior, Stravach broke the 1500m Run record with a time of 4:36.42 at the Dr. Keeler Invitational and at the Emory Invitational in March, the Distance Medley Relay team of Williamson, Stravach, Ubersax and junior Elizabeth recorded a time 12:16.46 to take control of the top spot on the Emory all-time list.

In the four scored meets prior to the UAA and NCAA Division III Championships, the Eagles posted first finishes in all of them, winning the Emory Invitational, Emory Classic, Berry Field Day Invitational and the Mount Laurel Invitational.

Williamson added academic honors to go along with her athletic achievements as she was named an Academic All-American for the second consecutive as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Williamson as well as Aiello represented the Eagles on the CoSIDA Academic All-District team for their academic and athletic performances.
