Emory Track & Field Teams Head To Columbia For Carolina Challenge

Emory Track & Field Teams Head To Columbia For Carolina Challenge

The Emory Men's and Women's Track & Field Programs will contend with a crowded field this weekend (Jan. 31st – Feb. 1st) at the Carolina Challenge in Columbia, SC. The University of South Carolina will host the event, which is set to include over 100 men's and women's teams.

The competition is a two-day event. The first day, Friday, will start off with the women's weight throw at 10:00 a.m. The women's 60m Dash will open the action on the track, as it begins its trials at 11:00 a.m. The day's field events will finish around 4:00 p.m. with the women's pole vault, while the track competitions will conclude roughly at 7:25 p.m., with the men's 3000m Run. The men's 5000m Run and the men's pole vault kick off Saturday's slate of activities at 10:00 a.m. The meet will close with the women's 4x400m Relay at 4:30 p.m., which is scheduled to follow the 4:00 p.m. men's shot put – the final field event.

The Carolina Indoor Track & Field Complex will feature a talented collection of teams. Most of the teams registered to run are either DI or DII programs. Of the DI programs, North Carolina A&T and Kansas University, enter the competition nationally ranked. The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association has rated them as No. 9 and No. 14 in DI, respectively. Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Furman, Hampton, High Point, Limestone, Newberry, North Florida, Northern Colorado, Presbyterian, Southeast Louisiana, South Carolina State, Tusculum, Wingate, Winthrop, and Wofford are some of the others that will also be on hand. Joining the Eagles in making the trip from Georgia will be Brewton-Parker College (NAIA), Paine College (DII), Savannah State (DII), the Clayton State men's team (DII), the Georgia Southern women's team (DI), and the Mercer women's team (DI).

Emory's previous competition was last Saturday's JDL Flat is Fast Invitational in Winston-Salem, NC. The men's team saw nine personal-records fall at the event held at the JDL Fast Track, while the women's side used the non-team scoring meet to record eight career-best marks. Emory will be sending a group that consists mostly of sprinters and throwers to the competition, with many of the distance runners receiving a weekend of rest. After the Carolina Challenge, the Eagles will take a weekend off leading up to the Samford Open back at the Birmingham Crossplex (Feb. 14th – Feb. 15th).
