Sheckter, Bondi Win Conference Titles On Day Two as Women's Track & Field Finish Third

The Emory University women's track and field team finished in third-place after the final day of the University Athletic Association Indoor Championships at The Armory in New York, NY, where juniors Laura Sheckter and Rebekah Bondi both won conference titles.

Emory showed that its women's team had elite sprinters. Junior Rebekah Bondi and freshman Ella Lavelle claimed first and second place in the 60m Dash event. Bondi's event win means that she is now an All-UAA performer in two separate events, as she also placed third in the long jump yesterday. Bondi (7.70, 10 pts.) and Lavelle (7.89, 8 pts.) crossed in consecutive fashion in front of junior Michelle Rosenblum, who also scored two points for her team by taking seventh-place with a time of 8.10. Bondi nearly captured All-UAA recognition in a third event, the 200m Run, but the Collegeville, PA native landed in fourth-place (5 pts.) after she raced in 25.48 seconds. Sophomore Hannah Lansberry clocked a 59.00 in the 400m Run, a time that put her in fifth-place and garnered five points.

In the field, the women's team gave stellar performances. The Shot Put competition saw three scorers emerge for the Eagles. Laura Sheckter came up with a 13.55m heave, which broke her own Emory record of 13.51m that she set back on Jan. 19th and made her a UAA Champion. Senior Greta Wilker jumped on a plane Saturday night to fly in from North Carolina, where she served as a key cog in the Emory softball lineup yesterday, and found her way on the podium. Wilker, the winner of last season's UAA Outdoor Shot Put event, threw the shot 11.80m to take second-place (8 pts.). Also scoring in the Shot Put was freshman Hope Jackson. The newcomer ended up in sixth-place with her 10.70m throw (3 pts.).

The final field event to see the Eagles earn points for the women's team was the Triple Jump, in which senior Amy Hunter and junior Ayriel Coleman placed inside the top-eight. Hunter and Coleman finished in sixth and seventh-place, respectively. Hunter stretched the tape to a distance of 11.32m to accrue three points and Coleman covered 11.10m for two points.

The collective efforts of the women's team totaled 96.33 points, which was more than 30 points better than fourth-place Carnegie Mellon. Washington University was the victor in the team competition with 168 points, and the University of Chicago slotted in second-place with 161.33 points.

The Emory women's track and field team must now prepare for the Tufts Final Qualifer, which serves as the last opportunity for the Eagles to post marks that would qualify them for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Emory will compete at Tufts on Friday, Mar. 7th in Boston, MA.
