Tiaffay, Thompson Break Program Records on Day One of Lee Flames Invitational

The Emory University track and field program competed in the first day of the Lee Flames Invitational opening with a strong start in Cleveland, Tennessee.

The Eagles were led on the track by sophomore Madison Tiaffay who broke the program record in the mile with a time of 5:00.28 good for a fifth place finish. Senior Lily Taylor also saw a top-10 finish in the mile with a time of 5:06.14.

Also on the track for the women was junior Kaya Binetti who finished seventh in the 200m running a 25.86. Fellow junior Samantha Glass followed with an eighth place finish in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:09.58 while junior Liesl Scherrer took third place in the 5000m with a time of 17:08.15, the sixth best time in Division III this season.

Highlighting the field events for the women was freshman Mable Mutumwa who took home the gold in the javelin event with a distance of 40.52m, the ninth best distance in the division.

Continuing his impressive season on the field for the men was senior Kenya Sei who finished first in the hammer throw with a distance of 54.45m to set the meet record.

Starting on the track for the men was freshman Graham Greene finishing eighth in the event running a  57.59. Following him was junior Marcus Cheema who finished the 1500m run with a time of 3:55.35 to take first place and rank 27th in the division. Rounding out things on the track was graduate student Ethan Thompson taking fifth in the 10000m running a 30:10.54, ranking 16th in Division III and breaking the program record. Senior Tristan Olpin also competed in the 10000m with a time of 30:43.25 to fall under the previous program record. The Eagles will return for day two of the Lee Flames Invitational on Saturday, April 6.
