The No. 3-ranked Emory University volleyball team got off to a
fine start at the Maryville College Tournament on Saturday as the
Eagles recorded a pair of victories, defeating Lynchburg College,
3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 27-25, 25-16), and No. 16 Southwestern
University, 3-2 (24-26, 25-8, 20-25, 25-13, 15-9). With the
two triumphs, Emory moves to 3-0 on the year.
Senior Amelia McCall led a balanced Eagles’
offensive effort with 14 kills against the Hornets of
Lynchburg. Junior Jessica McAlvany and
sophomore Breanah Bourque aided the cause by each
chipping in 13 terminations. Junior Natalie
Schonefeld doled out 43 assists while junior Ali
Wright helped spearhead a strong defensive effort at the
net with five solo blocks.
In the day’s finale, Emory had to rally from a 2-1 deficit to
secure the victory. McCall once again racked up a team-high
14 kills while McAlvany turned in a strong all-around game with 14
successful attacks, 13 digs and two blocks. Wright helped in
the offensive department with 10 terminations while sophomore
Alena Ransom totaled nine kills. Senior
Kelsey Krzyston picked up nine digs while
Schonefeld registered 46 assists.
Emory continues play in the tournament on Sunday when it meets with
Mount Saint Joseph and host Maryville College.
