No. 2 Emory Voleyball Tops Randolph-Macon And Washington & Lee

The No. 2-ranked Emory volleyball team continued its winning ways on Saturday, notching two more victories on the final day of action of the Emory National Invitational Tournament. The Eagles recorded a 3-0 triumph (25-19, 25-23, 25-23) win over Randolph-Macon College in their first match of the afternoon before coming away with another 3-0 decision (25-19, 25-17, 25-10) against Washington & Lee.  The two wins upped Emory’s win streak to 10 matches while boosting its overall record to 27-4.

In a hard-played defensive contest, Emory finished the Randolph-Macon match hitting 20.1 percent (52-25—134) compared to the Yellow Jackets’ 11.1 percent (28-15—77).  Senior Amelia McCall paced all players with 17 kills and 17 digs while sophomore Breanah Bourque and junior Jessica McAlvany totaled 13  and 11 put-aways, respectively.  Junior setter Natalie Schonefeld totaled 44 assists and freshman Sarah Taub helped the defensive cause with 13 digs.  Emory held a 65-49 edge in digs while Randolph-Macon concluded the match with a 9.5-6.0 margin in total blocks.

Emory’s offense was in high gear against Washington & Lee, blasting its way to a 38.3 attack percentage (42-11—81).  Once again, McCall spearheaded the attack with 11 kills and hitting 58.8 percent (11-1—17).  Sophomores Alena Ransom and Breanah Bourque chipped in eight kills and helped Schonefeld finish with 35 assists.  The Eagles posted a 36-25 edge in digs and were led in that department by McCall and Landers with eight apiece.

McCall was named MVP of the Invitational while Schonefeld and junior Ali Wright earned spots on the all-tournament team.  Other all-tourney members included Jennifer McKannan of Birmingham Southern, Jessica Sears and Mallory Carter of Randolph-Macon and Lindsey Dee and M.A. Boles of Washington & Lee.

Emory returns to action next Friday and Saturday (Nov. 5-6) when it plays at the University Athletic Association Championships.  The Eagles enter the Championships as the No. 1 seed and will meet Rochester at noon on Friday.
