Emory Volleyball Well Represented On All-UAA Team -- Bourque Named MVP

A total of five members of the No. 4-ranked Emory University volleyball team have been chosen to the 2012 All-University Athletic Association Team.  Three players were afforded first-team acclaim, while two landed honorable-mention status.   The all-league teams were selected by the conference coaches.  Emory enters the upcoming NCAA Tournament with an overall record of 31-5 and is coming off a title performance at the UAA Championships this past weekend.

Senior Breanah Bourque (Houston, TX) highlighted the Eagles' selections by being tabbed as a first-team honoree for the third straight year.  The 5-foot-11 middle was also chosen as the league's MVP, the sixth Emory player to earn that honor.  Bourque ranks as the conference's most efficient hitter, registering a .393 attack percentage that ranks eighth among all Division III performers.  The school's all-time leader with a .388 hitting mark, she holds down the No. 5 spot on the Eagles' all-time ladder with 1,481 kills.  She has produced 27 matches of double-figure kills this season and has compiled the top seven individual match hitting percentages by an Emory player this year.  A two-time All-America honoree, Bourque tops the team and is third in the conference in blocks (0.82 bps).  She was selected by the American Volleyball Coaches Association as the D-III National Player of the Week (Oct. 23) and has been selected as the UAA's Offensive Player of the Week on three occasions in 2012.

Senior Alex Duhl (Los Angeles, CA) brought home First Team All-UAA honors for the the first time after earning honorable mention nods as a freshman and junior.  The 6-foot middle has a hitting effort of .295, fifth on the UAA chart, and has produced 11 matches of double-figure terminations.   A solid presence at the net, she is averaging 0.71 blocks per set, seventh in the conference, and has come through with 11 matches of four or more blocks.  Duhl has been chosen to all-tournament teams this year at the Wid Guisler Invitational, the Emory Volleyball Classic and Emory Invitational.  Career-wise, she has chalked up 283 total blocks, 11th on the school's all-time list.

Rounding out the trio of first-team honorees was freshman setter Sydney Miles (Oklahoma City, OK).   The 6-foot-1 Miles paces the UAA and stands 15th nationally with a 10.62 assists-per-set average with that effort 11th on the school's seasonal chart. Miles has doled out  1,242 assists, the 12th-highest seasonal mark in school annals, including a season-high 54 in a five-set win over Cal Lutheran (Sept. 14).  Her setting has helped Emory post a team hitting effort of .246, second in the conference and 15th nationally.  Miles was named the UAA Rookie of the Year, the first Eagle since Natalie Schonefeld (2008) and sixth overall to earn that distinction.

Emory's honorable-mention choices were freshman Taylor Erwin (Woodlands, TX) and sophomore Cami Silverman (Bellevue, WA).   Erwin, 5-foot-11, has been a stellar defensive performer with her team-high average of 4.38 digs per set ranking seventh in the UAA and pacing all of the conference's frosh.  At last weekend's UAA Championships, Erwin established a school seasonal record with 598 digs, bettering the previous standard of 574 set by Maggie Ramm during the 2007 season.  She has recorded a dozen matches of 20 or more digs including a season-high 33 against Washington University (Oct. 14).   The 5-foot-11 Silverman has pounded out 10 or more kills on 12 occasions (six in the last seven matches) and has 10 double-doubles (kills/digs) to her credit.  She stands second on the team and 11th among league players in digs (3.16 dps).

Emory opens NCAA Tournament action on Friday (Nov. 9) at the Newport News, Virginia, Regional.  The Eagles' first-round foe will be Salem College with that match beginning at 3:00 p.m.
