Berry Storms Back to Defeat Covenant in NCAA Second Round

For the second consecutive day, the Berry College Vikings needed a fifth set to earn the victory as the Vikings defeated Covenant College in the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship Second Round at the Woodruff PE Center on the campus of Emory University.

The first day of the Atlanta regional featured three five-set matches and day two was no different as Berry and Covenant went toe-to-toe with Berry pulling out the 18-25, 23-25, 25-16, 25-20, 15-10 come-from-behind victory. The Vikings now advance to the Round of 16 to face the winner of Emory and Christopher Newport. Match time is slated for 7:00 PM on Saturday.

The Scots were in cruise control to open the match, taking the first two sets in easy fashion but Emily Hancock and the Vikings reversed momentum. Hancock registered 19 kills over the final three sets including five in decisive fifth set to power the Vikings to the win.

Hancock collected all five of her fifth-set kills in the early stages of the set, helping Berry stake a 10-5 advantage. The Scots answered with a pair to cut the deficit to three but that was as close as they would get as the Vikings advanced to the regional final.

Hancock led all players with 27 kills and added 27 digs. Hannah Kate Thompson posted 55 assists and Elizabeth corralled 31 digs, both figures representing match-highs.

Hannah Harris recorded 18 kills to highlight the Covenant attack with Jessica Seehorn posting 11 terminations. Four Scots tallied double-digit digs with Ginny Moore and Hannah Stewart leading the team with 22 apiece.

Covenant sees its record-setting 17-match winning snapped to conclude its season with a 24-8 overall record.
