Results

The No. 27-ranked Emory University women's cross country team turned in a solid showing at the 2010 NCAA South/Southeast Division III Regional Championships on Saturday, posting a second-place finish out of 25 teams.  The Eagles’ second-place performance enabled the squad to earn an automatic bid to next Saturday’s (Nov. 20) national championship in Waverly, Iowa.

Emory finished with 54 points, just four behind Rhodes College’s top mark of 50 points.  Christopher Newport held down the third spot with 177 points while Centre College (186 pts.) and Lynchburg (198 pts.) rounded out the top five.  The Eagles had two of the top three individual finishers and four of the top 13 overall.

Junior Tess Gallegos highlighted the Emory effort, claiming first place in the 191-runner field with a 6k time of 21:51.  Her effort marked the fifth time that an Emory runner had captured the top spot in the event and the first since 2006 when Amy DiBianca accomplished that feat.  Senior Natalie Fenn was the second Emory entry to cross the finish line and third overall with a time of 22:19.  Sophomore Melanie Frank (22:50) and junior Sara Gelb (23:00) came through with 11th and 13th-place finishes, respectively, while Sabrina Jeppsson rounded out the team’s scorers with her time of 23:19 placing her 27th in the field.  All of Emory’s scorers earned all-region honors as did Calley Edwards who finished 33rd with an effort of 23:26.

Emory has now finished second or higher in the NCAA Regionals in each of the last 20 seasons.
