2013 EMORY WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY RECAP

With a solid cast of veterans leading the way, the 2013 Emory women’s cross country team enjoyed a fine season, upholding the program’s reputation as one of the top programs in the nation.

One of the team’s highlights was qualifying for the NCAA Division III Championships for the ninth straight season and for the 22nd time in the past 23 campaigns.   Emory earned the right to compete at nationals after posting a runner-up performance at the NCAA South/Southeast Region Championships, the 23rd consecutive year that it had finished second or higher.  Emory had three runners among the top 13 overall finishers, highlighted by junior Tamara Surtees who earned all-region honors for the third time in her career after crossing the finish line in the No. 6 spot out of 193 entries with a 6K time of 22:37.  Senior Emily Caesar and junior Marissa Gogniat each captured all-region accolades by virtue of their eighth- and 13th-place finishes, respectively, while freshman Michelle Kagei (23rd), senior Meredith Lorch (26th) and junior Elise Viox (30th) also were bestowed all-region acclaim.

The Eagles came through with some outstanding efforts at several meets including first-place efforts at the Furman Classic and Sewanee Invitational.  In addition, Emory made a fine account of itself with a fourth-place outing out of 17 squads at the Charlotte Invitational.

Surtees was named the team's Most Valuable Runner after ranking as the Eagles’ No. 1 runner in all seven of her competitions.  A Second Team All-UAA honoree, Surtees clocked a 6K personal best 22:07 at the Furman Classic that placed second overall out of 137 runners. Emily Caesar bounced back in fine fashion after an injury shortened junior campaign and was selected as the Most Improved Runner.  Michelle Kagei was tabbed as the Rookie of the Year while Meredith Lorch was the recipient of the Coaches Award.
