The 2015 edition of the Emory women’s cross country program enjoyed a memorable campaign that included many highlights on both the team and individual level.
One of the high points was qualifying for the NCAA D-III Championships for the 11th straight season and for the 24th time over the past 25 campaigns. Emory posted a 21st-place finish at nationals, its best showing since 2007. The Eagles earned the right to compete at the Championships after racing to their second consecutive NCAA South/Southeast Region title, besting the 27-team field with 35 points, well ahead of runner-Rhodes College who finished with 106 points. All five of Emory’s scorers placed among the top overall 15 finishers, highlighted by senior Elise Viox who topped the field of 200 runners with a then-personal best 6K time of 22:05. Her performance represented the first time since 2010 that an Emory runner had won the Regional title and enabled her to capture South/Southeast Region Athlete of the Year. Viox followed her effort at Regionals by clocking a personal-best showing of 22:01 at the D-III Championships, which ranked 58th out of 28 entries. Viox finished as the Eagles’ No. 1 runner in all eight of the team’s competitions.
Other Emory athletes who brought home all-region kudos included senior Aileen Rivell (4th place), sophomore Gabrielle Stravach (5th place), junior Sophie Cemaj (10th place), freshman Clare Ubersax (15th place), junior Mia Eisenhandler (16th place) and sophomore Hanna Saadegh-Vaziri (19th place).
In addition to its finish at NCAA Regionals, Emory recorded first-place performances at the Furman Classic and the JSU Foothills Invitational, while coming through with a solid effort at the UW-Oshkosh AAE Invitational with a fifth-place finish out of 46 teams.
Emory finished fifth at the conference championships and was led by Viox, whose eighth-place finish allowed her to land Second Team All-UAA honors.
