Women’s Cross Country Finishes 8th At NCAA National Championships, Tied for Second-Best Finish in Program History

The Emory women's cross country team concluded their season at the NCAA National Championships on a high note, logging an eighth-place team finish. The event was held in Newville, Pennsylvania at Big Spring High School. The 2023 team's performance at the national meet is the second-best finish in program history, behind just the 1997 team's seventh place finish at the event and tied the 1981 team's finish.

Boosting the Eagles to their record-setting finish was graduate student Brigid Hanley, who finished eighth out of 293 overall entries. This is the third-best individual performance at the NCAA National Championships for the women's team, behind Annika Urban's sixth place finish in 2022 and Vista Beasley's third place finish in 1997. Hanley was the first Eagle to cross the finish line in each meet she competed in this season. With the top-40 finish, Hanley earned All-American Honors.

Also bringing home All-American acclaim was freshman Elizabeth Csikai, who competed in just her second meet of the season on Saturday. The rookie raced to a 22nd place finish, clocking in at 21:29.5. Csikai was coming off a third-place finish at the NCAA South Regional. The freshmen impressed in her limited time this season, giving the Eagles a glimpse of what's to come.

Two more Eagles finished in the top-100 of runners, with junior Liesl Scherrer finishing in 51st with a time of 22:04.3, and freshman Madison Tiaffay in 77th and clocking in at 22:17.6.

Rounding out the Eagles' scores were junior Natalie Sandlow in 218th with a time of 23:14.4, freshman Cameron Gupta in 236th with a time of 23:37.7, and senior Lily Taylor in 242nd with a time of 23:29.9.

This is the third time the program has finished in the top-10 at the national meet and the first time since 1997 that the Eagles have achieved the mark.
