Emory Athletics Weekly Preview - February 14th - 20th

The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for February 14th – February 20th. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

Women's Basketball:

After splitting conference contests on the road this past weekend, the Emory University women's basketball team will play three games this week as they ramp up play to make a final push for the postseason. The Eagles (13-7, 7-4) will play their last non-conference game of the season on the road against the Piedmont Lions (20-4) before finally returning home for two this weekend. On Friday. Emory will take on the Case Western Reserve Spartans (7-15, 2-9) at 7:30 PM before the Carnegie Mellon Tartans (10-10, 4-7) come to town for their rematch on Sunday at 2:00 PM.

At 7-4 in conference play, Emory sits in a tie for second place in the UAA with WashU with three conference games remaining. The Eagles hold a 19-14 all-time series record advantage over Piedmont in what will be their first matchup of the season. Emory defeated Case Western Reserve earlier this year 71-50 to bring their all-time head-to-head record to 27-28 in the Spartans favor. With the Eagles 73-60 victory over the Tartans earlier this year their all-time head-to-head record was moved to 43-21 with Emory holding a resounding lead over Carnegie Mellon. Junior Claire Brock led the Eagles in scoring this past weekend, including a 26-point outburst against WashU on Friday to help Emory earn their first-ever victory on the Bears' home floor.

Softball:

After dropping its home opener this past Saturday, the Emory University softball team looks to earn its first victory of the season with a home-and-home series against Agnes Scott College. The Eagles (0-2) take on the Scotties (0-2) at Agnes Scott Thursday evening at 6:00 PM before coming back home Friday afternoon to play at 3:00 PM. Emory last played Agnes Scott in 2016, claiming two wins over the Scotties to push the all-time series record to 34-0 in Emory's favor. Sophomore Abby Sekoff had a solid opening weekend for the Eagles, going 4-for-5 at the plate with one run scored while also appearing in the circle, tossing a scoreless frame.

Men's Basketball:

After dropping a tough road contest to Chicago on Sunday, the Emory University men's basketball team returns home this weekend for matchups against two UAA foes. The No. 18 ranked Eagles (16-5, 9-2) face off against the Case Western Reserve Spartans (17-4, 7-3) on Friday at 5:30 PM before matching up against the Carnegie Mellon Tartans (11-9, 4-6) at 12:00 PM on Sunday. Emory leads the UAA with a conference record of 9-2 and has a chance to clinch the UAA title Friday night. The Eagles defeated the Spartans earlier this year by a score of 80-70 to bring their all-time head-to-head record to 35-21 in Emory's favor. Emory had a resounding 94-66 victory over Carnegie Mellon earlier in the season to bring their all-time series record to 43-22 with the advantage to the Eagles. Senior Matthew Schner continues to be a model of excellence for the Eagles as he matched his career high in points against Chicago pouring in 31 and has led the team in scoring in 14 consecutive games.

Baseball:

A successful 3-1 week to start the season for the Emory baseball team sees them going into their weekend series against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with a strong head of momentum. The Eagles (3-1) will play one game a day, Friday through Sunday, against the Stags (2-1) as Emory looks to build upon its burgeoning offense that put up 43 runs in their first four games. The Eagles and Stags have faced off once before with the Eagles taking home the victory 9-3 back in 1997. Senior Robby Wacker had an outstanding opening week for the Eagles with seven runs, seven RBI and two home runs including the go ahead shot against the Covenant Scots in the ninth inning on Friday.

Swimming & Diving:

After a tremendous UAA Championships for both the men and women, the Emory swimming & diving teams will head to one final tune up meet in Charlotte, NC before competing at the NCAA Division III Championships. The Eagles will compete in the Royal Open on Friday, February 18th and Saturday, February 19th. Both teams had an immensely successful weekend at the UAA championships as each took home their 23rd consecutive conference crown. Between the two, the Eagles combined for 56 All-UAA performances, captured 23 event titles and set 10 UAA meet records.

Indoor Track & Field:

The Emory University indoor track & field team will travel to Columbia, SC for the USC Indoor Open which marks its final regular season meet before they get started with postseason action. The Eagles are coming off an impressive weekend where they split time in Boston and Birmingham.

At the David Hemery Valentine Invitational the men's DMR team, consisting of Jacob Hedgepeth, Liam Fost, Jon Marcus and Spencer Watry, had a standout day running for a time of 10:02.27 which set a new program indoor record by nearly eight seconds. Watry also competed in the 800m run where he set his second school record of the meet running in a time of 1:51.95. Marcus went on to compete in the 3000m run where he won his heat with a time of 8:29.69 which makes him the second fastest individual in the event in program history. The record book changes kept coming for the Eagles, as senior Bella Racette competed in the 5000m run and registered a time of 17:42.21 which sits as the 24th best individual time in the nation and also puts her as the sixth fastest runner in the event in school history.

Men's Tennis:

The Emory University men's tennis team takes on Tennessee Wesleyan after dropping their first match of the spring season to Georgia Gwinnett this past Saturday. The Eagles face off against the Bulldogs of TWU in their first home match of the season on Friday at 2:00 PM in Atlanta.

Women's Tennis:

The Emory University women's tennis team opens its 2022 spring season with an exhibition match against Kennesaw State before taking on Brenau University. The Eagles open the season hosting the KSU Owls at 2:00 PM on February 19th before challenging the Tigers of BU Sunday morning. The Eagles had a successful fall season in which freshman Eliza McPherron won the ITA Cup Division III Singles National Championship and the doubles tandem of junior Alexa Goetz and sophomore Xuanjin Li took home the ITA South Regional Doubles Championship.
