Emory Athletics Weekly Preview - February 21st - 27th

The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for February 21st – February 27th. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

Indoor Track & Field:

The Emory University indoor track & field teams travel to Cleveland, OH where they will compete in the UAA Indoor Championships on Saturday, February 26th and Sunday, February 27th. The men's team will be competing against ranked teams No. 12 Carnegie Mellon and No. 23 WashU. The women's team will be competing against ranked teams No. 4 WashU, No. 5 Chicago and No. 16 Rochester. The Eagles last competed in the UAA Indoor Championships in 2020 where the men took seventh place and the women finished third. The men have won the UAA Indoor Championships seven times with their last crown coming in 2009. For the women, they have won three total UAA Indoor Championships with their last win coming in 2013.

Swimming & Diving:

The Emory University swimming & diving team will send four divers to represent the Eagles at the NCAA Region 2 Diving Championships at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX on Friday February 25th and Saturday, February 26th. Junior Lucas Bumgarner and sophomore Alex York qualified for the men while freshman Ariana Khan and sophomore Tess Klugherz qualified for the women. These four athletes compete this weekend with the hopes of qualifying for the NCAA DIII Championships. Bumgarner was named the UAA Diver of the Year at the UAA Championships after winning the 1-meter dive and 3-meter dive events. York qualified for the 3-meter finals at the UAA meet where he took eighth. Khan advanced to the final of the 1-meter dive event where she finished fifth at the UAA Championships. Meanwhile Klugherz narrowly missed the finals cut coming in 10th in the prelims in the 1-meter dive event but finished eighth in the 3-meter.

Men's Tennis:

The Emory University men's tennis team travels to Cleveland, OH this weekend to compete in the ITA National Indoors Championship. The Eagles are seeded second of eight teams coming into this tournament and will face off against the No. 7 seed WashU in the first round of play at 9:00 AM on Friday. The semi-finals and finals will be played on Saturday and Sunday. Case Western Reserve comes into the tournament seeded first with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Trinity rounding out the top four. Other competing schools are Brandeis University, Gustavus Adolphus and University of Chicago. The Eagles have won nine National Indoor Championships in the event's 20-year history including a win in 2020.

Baseball:

The Eagles (4-3), coming off a 1-2 weekend against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, will play a one off game in LaGrange against the Panthers (6-0) on Tuesday at 6:00 PM before a three-game series against Huntingdon (4-2) beginning Friday. The Eagles are 36-16 all-time against the Panthers with their most recent faceoff in 2021 going in favor of LaGrange 9-4. Emory's all-time head-to-head record against Huntingdon is 40-18 in the Eagles favor but the Hawks emerged victorious in their last matchup in 2021 by a score of 6-5. Sophomore Steven Hunt had an outstanding weekend against the Stags finishing the series 7-for-10 with two doubles, one home run and eight RBI.

Softball:

The Emory University will take on the Berry Vikings in a doubleheader on Wednesday, February 23rd in Rome, GA. The Eagles (2-2), coming off a doubleheader sweep of Agnes Scott this past Friday, match up against the Vikings (3-3) in Rome, GA. The Eagles hold a 12-9 head-to-head record over the Vikings with Emory winning its last two against Berry. Senior Mattie Ryan was phenomenal against the Scotties earning the win as a pitcher in both games while also going 5-for-6 at the plate with four runs and one RBI.

Men's Basketball:

After a thrilling 2-0 weekend in which the Emory University men's basketball team clinched the conference title, the Eagles will play one last regular season game against Rochester on Saturday. The Eagles (18-5, 11-2) will face off against the second place Yellowjackets (16-7, 8-5) at 2:00 PM in the Woodruff PE Center as they begin to prepare for the NCAA tournament. Prior to the game, there will be a ceremony to honor the three member senior class of Matthew Schner, Nick Stuck and Romin Williams. The all-time head-to-head record between these two teams is 30-36 with the advantage to the Yellowjackets but the Eagles have won their past four matchups including a 64-61 win in the UAA opener. Senior Matthew Schner was an unstoppable force going for a career-high 39 points on Friday night which is the second most for any player in program history before scoring 28 points and hitting the game-winner in overtime with four seconds left against Carnegie Mellon on Sunday, earning him UAA Athlete of the Week honors for a fourth time this year.

Women's Basketball:

After splitting games this past weekend, the Emory University women's basketball team returns to action for its final regular season game of the season against Rochester on Saturday. The Eagles (15-8, 8-5) will close the regular season against the third-place Yellowjackets (15-9, 7-6) at 4:00 PM at the Woodruff PE Center. Prior to tip-off there will be a ceremony that recognizes the playing careers of the three member senior class of Anna Arato, Kennedy Cater and Tori Huggins. The Eagles are 28-35 all-time against the Yellowjackets with UR edging the Eagles in overtime during the previous meeting earlier this season. With her eight steal performance against Case Western Reserve on Friday night, junior Mariane Auza is now tied for the conference lead in steals per game at 2.7.
