Emory Athletics Weekly Preview: November 14-22

The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for November 14th – November 22nd. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

 

Cross Country:

The Emory University men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Lansing, MI this weekend to compete in the NCAA Championships. The teams will compete on Saturday, with the women set to begin at 11:00 AM and the men at 12:00 PM, on the Forrest Acres course in Lansing. The men's team were automatic qualifiers for the NCAA Championship by virtue of winning the NCAA South Regional Championships this past weekend while the women were one of 22 teams to earn an at-large bid to the championship. The men will come into the championship race as the eighth ranked team in the country while the women enter as the 30th ranked team. The women are competing in their 17th consecutive NCAA Championships after finishing in 19th at the 2021 at the national meet. The men will be racing in the NCAA Championship for the ninth consecutive season after registering a 23rd place finish at last year's championships. Senior Annika Urban is coming off a USTFCCCA All-American season as she finished in 12th place at last year's championship event and comes into this years meet having won six straight meets to open the year including the UAA Championship and the NCAA South Regional Championship. Other notable runners for the women are All-Region runners Claire Hu, Jenna Daly, Luna McCauley and Lily Taylor. Senior Spencer Moore looks to become the men's cross country team's first All-American runner since 2019 as he has led the Eagles in each of the meets he has competed in this year including setting the program record for fastest 8k time at the UAB Blazer Classic with a time of 24:22.1. Other notable runners for the men include All-Region runners Brett Lucas, Ethan Thompson, Scott Masterson and David Evans.

Women's Soccer:

The Emory University women's soccer team, coming off of a thrilling PK-game against Centre, will play in the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament against Messiah on Saturday. The No. 18 ranked Eagles (13-4-1) will travel to host site Pittsburgh, PA to take on the No. 5 ranked Messiah Falcons (19-1-2) on Saturday at 7:30 PM in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles advanced to the Sweet 16 by virtue of defeating the Centre Colonels in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday in a 3-3 match that went to PK's after two overtime periods with Emory winning the PK session 4-2 in an instant classic match. The Eagles have matched up with the Falcons twice in program history, splitting the two matches, however, their most recent matchup came in the 2012 NCAA Tournament Championship match that the Falcons won 1-0 on a goal in the 21st minute. If the Eagles win their match against Messiah they will play the winner of the Sweet 16 match between No. 7 ranked and host school Carnegie Mellon and WashU in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Sunday at 6:00 PM. Junior Mia Han had the best weekend of her career in the first two matches of the NCAA Tournament scoring a hat trick in the first 20 minutes of the Eagles 7-0 win against Piedmont in the first round as well as the game-tying goal in the second overtime period against Centre in the second round to send the game to PK's.

Men's Basketball:

After opening their season with a resounding 18-point win over Piedmont on Tuesday, the Emory University men's basketball team returns to action with three more games this week. The Eagles (1-0) will open the week on the road in Sewanee, TN against the Sewanee Tigers (1-2) on Monday at 7:00 PM before welcoming the Guilford Quakers (2-1) to the Woodruff PE Center on Saturday at 1:00 PM before closing the week at home against the Covenant Scots (1-2) on Tuesday, November 22nd at 7:30 PM. The Eagles sport a 26-19 all-time series advantage over the Tigers with their most recent matchup a 94-70 drubbing by Emory in 2019. Against the Quakers, the Eagles hold an 8-3 series edge, winning their most recent matchup by a score of 66-55 at home in November of last season. The Eagles boast a dominant 9-2 win-loss advantage over the Scots all-time, however, Covenant emerged victorious in their most recent matchup, an overtime thriller in December of last season. Freshman Jair Knight was the story of the Eagles opening night game, going a perfect 8-for-8 from the field to finish the contest with 19 points in the win for Emory.

Women's Basketball:

After a torrid 3-0 start to the season, the Emory University women's basketball team is back in action with four more games this week, including hosting the Emory Tip Off Classic this weekend. The Eagles (3-0) will host their annual Emory Tip Off Classic at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta, GA with their first game coming against No. 15 Mary Hardin-Baylor (0-0) on Saturday at 3:00 PM before taking on Piedmont (2-0) on Sunday at 5:00 PM. The Lynchburg Hornets will also be competing in the Emory Tip Off Classic this weekend. The home tournament will be bookended by a rematch of the LaGrange Panthers (2-1) on Wednesday at 7:30 PM in LaGrange, GA and a pre-Thanksgiving contest against the Agnes Scott Scotties (0-3) on Tuesday, November 22nd at 5:30 PM in the Woodruff PE Center. The Eagles sport a 15-4 record over the Panthers all-time having played earlier this year in both teams season opener in which Emory emerged with a 79-57 victory. The meeting between Emory and Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday marks the first meeting ever between the two programs. The Eagles hold a 20-14 all-time series advantage over the Piedmont Lions all-time, with Emory winning their most recent matchup in February of this year 63-49. Emory is a perfect 17-0 against the Scotties all-time, winning by nearly 50 points in their most recent meeting back in 2019. Reigning All-UAA First Team selection Claire Brock had a week for the ages in which she averaged 25.7 points per game including a 33-point outburst against Colorado College on Saturday.
