Emory Athletics Weekly Preview: January 17-22

The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for January 17th – January 22nd. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

 

Women's Basketball:

The Emory University women's basketball team heads into a pivotal conference weekend after coming off of a perfect 3-0 weekend which included a win over conference foe Carnegie Mellon that was capped off with an exhilarating alley-oop layup at the buzzer. The Eagles (11-2, 2-1 UAA) will travel to New York City on Friday at 5:30 PM for a date with the No. 8 ranked NYU Violets (11-2, 1-2 UAA) who are coming off of their first two losses of the season last weekend before making the trek to Waltham, MA to take on the Brandeis Judges (5-9, 0-3 UAA) on Sunday at 2:00 PM. The Eagles are 20-45 all-time against the NYU Violets although the Eagles have won three of the past six contests between the two teams. Against the Judges, the Eagles hold a 38-27 all-time series advantage including a current eight-game win streak that began in 2018. The Eagles went 3-0 this past weekend that included 20 plus point drubbings of Case Western Reserve and Rhodes but the most exciting game was against Carnegie Mellon that the Eagles won 68-66 on an alley-oop layup game-winner by senior Mariane Auza. Auza has been instrumental to the Eagles success as of late, as she has played over 20 minutes in each of the past four contests and is averaging 10 points per game in those games. The Eagles have been an elite defensive team this season and that shows in their opponents three point shooting as Emory holds their opposition to 19.6% shooting from deep the fifth best mark in the country.

Men's Basketball:

The Emory University men's basketball team, winners of a thrilling overtime game against No. 19 ranked Case Western Reserve on Sunday, head into a high stakes weekend with two more conference opponents on the docket. The No. 18 ranked Eagles (11-3, 2-1 UAA) will matchup against the NYU Violets (12-2, 1-2 UAA) in New York City, NY on Friday at 7:30 PM before taking on the Brandeis Judges (10-4, 2-1 UAA) at 12:00 PM on Sunday in Waltham, MA. The Eagles are 33-36 against the Violets all-time, however, Emory has been doing the bulk of the winning recently as highlighted by its current eight-game winning streak over NYU. The Eagles have been immensely successful against the Judges over the course of the two programs' histories with Emory holding a 38-30 all-time series advantage including winning seven of their last eight meetings. The Eagles overtime win marked freshman Jair Knight's first start of the season and he made the most of the opportunity scoring 18 points while also showing off his defensive chops with three steals and two blocks. With the Eagles performance this past weekend they are now up to third in the country in rebounds per game at 46.2 per contest as sophomore Cale Martens leads the Eagles with 7.3 a game.

Indoor Track & Field:

After hosting their first meet of the new calendar year this past weekend, the Emory University indoor track & field team will take to the road this weekend as they continue to ramp up for the upcoming postseason. The Eagles will travel to Colombia, SC for the Carolina Challenge on Friday and Saturday with events set to kickoff at 10:00 AM. There will be 31 total teams competing with many of them representing Division I and II institutions. The Eagles most recently competed in the Emory CrossPlex Showdown in which the women placed first and the men landed in the silver medalist position. For the men, sophomore Jackson Price had an outstanding weekend competing in the 200m dash where he ran a 21.99 second race which set the new best mark in program history, breaking a 13-year old school record. Graduate student Nyjah Willis has been impressive in her time in an Eagles uniform registering a distance of 16.17m in the weight throw which is the second best distance in program history.

Swimming & Diving:

Coming off an exciting week at the Knoxville Pro Swim Series, the Emory University swimming & diving team will be back in action this weekend for a tri-meet against West Florida and Delta State in the Woodruff PE Center on Saturday. The Eagles will be celebrating their seniors for Senior Day and recognizing each of their accomplishments in their time with Emory. The men will acknowledge the achievements of Lucas Bumgarner, Jeffrey De Groot, Joshua Giardinelli, William Goedecke, Jason Hamilton, Steven Kuhn, Colin LaFave, Justin Lum, Pat Pema, Caleb Peters, Lawrence Redmond, Tyler Russell, Will Schuler, Ryan Soh, Ethan Sternberg, Jack Wessell and Daniel Woodruff. The women will acknowledge the achievements of Marianne Allard, Sarah Byers, Julia Colizzo, Rose Gertzman, Anna Glowniak, Sammie Kass, Taylor Leone, Allie MacMillan, Caroline Maki, Grace Morris, Lanah Petrillo, Holly Robinson, Savannah Sowards, Nina Turcanu and Josie Uerling.
