Five Eagles Tabbed as UAA Athletes of the Week

Five Eagles were honored as University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.

Four from swimming & diving earned selections for three awards with graduate student Jason Hamilton and senior Lucas Bumgarner sweeping the men's awards and graduate student Taylor Leone and senior Caroline Maki garnering split honors for women's swimming. Senior Mason Johnson rounded out the weekly awards with his first-ever selection for men's basketball.

Johnson went for 20 and 24 points in back-to-back games as the Eagles split a pair of home games against Chicago and WashU on the hardwood. Johnson shot 69.2% across the two games and was 8-for-11 from the line. He averaged 6.0 RPG during the 1-1 weekend and added two assists, one steal and a block.

Hamilton earned one of four event wins for the Eagles on Saturday, going up against the University of Georgia in the final dual meet of the season. Hamilton was the event winner in the 200 Breast with a time of 1:57.03 - the only swimmer under two minutes at the meet and three seconds off his nation's leading time of 1:54.74. Hamilton was the fourth-best Eagle in the 100 Breast, touching at 56.73, and was part of two relays: Emory's B team that finished 5th in the 200 Medley (1:30.71) and Emory's B team that finished 7th in the 200 Freestyle (1:24.43).

Bumgarner led the Emory divers on Saturday, recording two second place finishes. Bumgarner posted a score of 361.88 on the 1-meter before adding a score of 342.90 in the 3-meter.

Maki and Leone highlighted the Eagles at the meet against UGA, with Maki winning the 100 Freestyle at 50.48 and Leone touching first in the 50 Free at 23.08. Maki currently ranks first nationally in the 100 and her time on Saturday would rank fourth nationally while Leone currently ranks second nationally in the event and her time on Saturday would rank fourth nationally. The duo raced individually as well in the 100 Fly and would tie for second in the event as they both touched the wall at 55.85.

Both swimmers were part of the Eagles' second place relay teams with Leone and Maki swimming the final two legs in the 200 Medley, leading the team to a time of 1:42.01, and in the 200 Free, Maki swam leadoff with Leone acting as the anchor as the team recorded a time of 1:33.61.

Members of the swimming and diving teams will be in action this weekend at the Auburn First-Chance Invitational before returning to Atlanta next week for the UAA Championships from February 8-11. Johnson and his men's basketball teammates begin a four-game road swing this week as they travel to the Midwest for rematches against UChicago and WashU.
