Emory Athletics Weekly Preview: March 6-12

The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for March 6th – March 12th. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

 

Indoor Track & Field:

The Emory University indoor track & field team will be sending six athletes to compete in the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships in Birmingham, AL this weekend. Three men and three women will be sent to compete in seven total events with competition set to begin on Friday and close out on Saturday. Senior Annika Urban will be competing in her first ever indoor championships as she qualified to compete in two separate events: one mile run and 3,000m run. Urban enters into nationals with the second best time in the nation in the 3,000m run (9:28.14) and the fourth best time in the one mile run (4:50.56). Competing in shorter distances sophomore Dashiel Tao Harris qualified for the 400m dash (57.31) and junior Libby Ranocha qualified for the 800m run (2:12.47). For the men, freshman Henry Brandstadter qualified for the NCAA meet with a distance of 7.40m in the long jump, the third best mark in the nation. Both competing in the 800m run, junior Spencer Watry and sophomore Marcus Cheema qualified with times of 1:51.46 and 1:51.64, respectively. The events will take place at the following times on Friday: men's long jump (2:30 PM), women's one mile prelim (2:50 PM), women's 400m prelim (3:25 PM), men's 800m prelim (3:45 PM) and women's 800m prelim (4:00 PM).

Women's Golf:

The Emory University women's golf team kicks off the Spring season this weekend with the Savannah Invitational in Pooler, Georgia on Monday and Tuesday and then follow that up with the UAA Championships in Lady Lake, Florida on Saturday and Sunday. The Eagles come into the week ranked number one in the nation according to the WGCA Poll after winning two out of the three tournaments they competed in during the Fall semester. Emory enters into the Spring season having returned all five golfers who competed at the 2022 NCAA Division III National Championships. The Eagles will be battling on the 5,676-yard, par-72 Savannah Quarters Country Club course for the 36-hole tournament. The Eagles taking part in the Savannah Invitational are sophomore Sharon Mun, sophomore Ellen Dong, junior Irene Wang, freshman Cindy Wang and freshman Katie Park. Competing at the Savannah Invitational in 2022, the Eagles turned in a second place finish just four strokes out of first place. The Eagles will be competing in the match-play format UAA Championships this weekend where they will look to repeat as conference champs after winning their first ever conference title last year.

Men's Golf:

The Emory University men's golf team kicks off its Spring season this week as they open the week at the Savannah Invitational on Monday and Tuesday before they tackle the UAA Championships this weekend. The No. 3 ranked Eagles will travel to Savannah, Georgia on Monday for the 54-hole Savannah Invitational before making their way later in the week to Lady Lake, Florida for the match-play format UAA Championships on Saturday and Sunday. The Eagles are one of six teams ranked in the top ten of the Bushnell/Golfweek Division III Coaches Poll competing at the Savannah Invitational which includes No. 1 Christopher Newport, No. 4 Piedmont and No. 5 Carnegie Mellon. Competing on Monday and Tuesday for the Eagles are sophomore Josh Qian, sophomore Michael Burry, sophomore Tony Li, sophomore Nicolas Nautiyal and freshman Brian Hanson. Later in the week the Eagles will be looking to repeat as UAA Champions after winning last year's UAA Championship. Emory has won 20 total UAA Championships including seven under the guidance of Head Coach Jon Sjoberg.

Baseball:

The Emory University baseball team has a busy week ahead with five games on the slate four of which will be played at Chappell Park. The week begins for the Eagles (6-3) at home with a makeup game against the Covenant Scots (3-2) on Monday at 1:00 PM before playing back-to-back games against the Wittenberg Tigers (2-1) on Tuesday and Wednesday at 1:00 PM in Chappell Park. Emory will take a day off before returning to play on Friday at 7:00 PM in Birmingham against the No. 2 ranked Birmingham-Southern Panthers (13-1) and will play their final game of the week back at home on Sunday at 1:00 PM also against the Panthers. After a 1-1 weekend against the Scots last weekend, Emory now sports a 16-10 record over Covenant all-time with the Eagles winning the last game this weekend 10-0 in five innings. The Eagles have only ever played two games against the Tigers, with both games coming in 1992, and Wittenberg emerged victorious in both of the prior meetings. Emory is 14-18 against the Panthers all-time with Birmingham-Southern having won their three most recent matchups. Senior Ellis Schwartz is coming off of a week in which he was named the UAA Athlete of the Week as well as landing a spot on the d3baseball.com Team of the Week for a week in which he hit .500 including three home runs and 13 RBI.

Men's Tennis:

The Emory University men's tennis team is on a West coast swing this week with a match against the Azusa Pacific Panthers (7-3) on Thursday at 5:30 PM in Azusa, California before taking part in the Stag-Hen Invitational in Claremont, California with a First Round matchup against the No. 22 ranked RPI engineers (2-2) on Friday. Emory is 3-5 in the all-time series against the Panthers with the most recent matchup between the two a 3-6 loss in 2018. The matchup on Friday between Emory and RPI will be the first ever meeting between the two teams. Also competing in the Stag-Hen Invitational are No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, No. 9 Pomona-Pitzer, No. 13 Trinity, No. 17 Gustavus Adolphus, No. 24 George Fox and No. 28 Swarthmore. The Eagles are coming off of a resounding 9-0 victory over Our Lady of the Lake at home on Friday including wins in singles and doubles from freshman Dean Kamanev.

Softball:

The Emory University softball team rides a six-game winning streak into their doubleheader with the Huntingdon Hawks on Friday. The Eagles (8-2) will face off against the Hawks (13-3) in a doubleheader at Cooper Field on Friday with the first game set to begin at 1:00 PM. Emory sports an impressive 29-9 record against Huntingdon all-time which includes a current six-game winning streak for the Eagles. Freshman Mackenzie Duford continues to be a force to be reckoned with in the circle as she started both games against Agnes Scott, striking out nine batters and not allowing a single walk in her eight innings pitched.
