The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for March 20th – March 26th. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

 

Women's Golf:

The Emory University women's golf team will travel across the country on Monday for the Patriot Invitational in Carmel, California. The 36-hole tournament will be played on the 5,930-yard, par-71 Poppy Hills Golf Club Course. The No. 1 ranked Eagles, who are coming off of their second consecutive UAA Championship victory, are set to face off against primarily Division II competition across the two-day tournament that begins on Monday. Competing for the Eagles at the Patriot Invitational are sophomore Sharon Mun, Sophomore Ellen Dong, junior Irene Wang, freshman Katie Park and freshman Cindy Wang. The Eagles have already had an immensely successful Spring season winning both of the tournaments they have attended including a riveting 3-2 victory over Carnegie Mellon in the match-play format UAA title event. Mun became the second consecutive Eagle to be named UAA Tournament MVP while Dong earned her second consecutive UAA All-Tournament Team selection.

Men's Tennis:

The Emory University men's tennis team rides a four match winning streak into a week that is bookended by matches for the Eagles. The No. 8 ranked Eagles (11-2) will open the week against the Kalamazoo Hornets (3-4) on Monday at 2:30 PM on the Woodruff PE Center courts before closing out the week on Sunday at 10:00 AM against the No. 31 MIT Engineers (4-2) with the match also being played at home. The Eagles hold a 13-19 record against the Hornets all-time, however, the Eagles have won the last 11 meetings between the two teams with the win streak dating back to 2001. Emory has only matched up against MIT twice before, most recently in 2001, with the Eagles having won both of their prior face offs. Freshman Dean Kamanev had one of the best weeks of his young career as he combined to go 6-0 in his singles and doubles matches to help fuel the Eagles to a 3-0 week.

Baseball:

The Emory University baseball team will begin the week on the road to take on a regional foe before kicking off their conference slate with a four-game home series this weekend. The Eagles (10-8) are set to travel to Rome, Georgia on Tuesday at 3:00 PM for a game against the Berry Vikings (7-12) before opening the conference season with a four-game home series against the NYU Violets (7-5) with the first game set for 3:00 PM on Friday in Chappell Park. The Eagles are 13-14 against the Vikings all-time with the two teams having split their last six matches coming into Wednesday's matchup. Emory holds a 12-7 all-time series advantage over the Violets with the Eagles winning last season's series 3-1. In the Eagles nail biting 12-10 victory over the Huntingdon Hawks last Tuesday senior Ellis Schwartz and junior Tyler McLoughlin did the heavy lifting for Emory as they each batted in three runs to help propel the team to victory.

Softball:

The Emory University softball team will open the week at home against a top-ranked regional opponent before beginning the conference portion of their season with a four-game home series this weekend. The Eagles (10-6) will welcome the No. 5 ranked Berry Vikings (18-4) to Cooper Field for one game on Wednesday at 3:00 PM before opening the conference slate with four more games at Cooper Field against the No. 7 ranked Case Western Reserve Spartans (14-0) with the first game set to get underway at 3:00 PM on Friday. The Eagles are 14-9 against the Vikings all-time with Emory having won the last four matchups between the two teams. Against the Spartans, the Eagles hold an impressive 41-14 all-time series advantage, however, the Spartans were the winners of last year's series against the Eagles, winning 4-0. The Eagles closed off their four game week last week with a 10-6 win over Piedmont in which senior Tyler Miller helped the Eagles to an offensive explosion with a bases clearing double in the top of the fifth inning.

Track & Field:

The Emory University track & field recorded their first team wins of the outdoor season in both the men's and women's division this past weekend at the Emory Spring Break Classic and look to add to that total as they play host to the Emory Thrills in the Hills Open this weekend. The meet is set to get underway at 2:00 PM on Friday with the men's hammer throw event as the Eagles host a meet for the second consecutive weekend. At last weekend's meet, senior Spencer Moore had an outstanding showing in the 3,000m steeplechase, winning the event with a time of 9:14.59 which stands as the fastest time in Division III this season. Sophomore Audrey Johnson had an exceptional meet of her own placing third in the 100m dash with a time of 12.07 seconds which is the fastest time in the nation so far this season.

Women's Tennis:

The Emory University women's tennis team will play in three home matches over the course of the weekend as they look to stretch their current winning streak out to six matches. The No. 9 ranked Eagles (4-3) will open their three match homestand with the NC Wesleyan Battling Bishops (2-5) on Friday at 2:00 PM before taking on the DePauw Tigers (4-9) on Saturday at 2:00 PM before finally closing out the week against the No. 10 ranked Sewanee Tigers (6-4) on Sunday at 3:00 PM. The Eagles will be celebrating Senior Day with a pre-match ceremony to recognize seniors Alexa Goetz and Stephanie Shulman before the match against DePauw on Saturday. The Eagles have only played the Battling Bishops once before, winning 5-0 in May of 2019. Emory is a perfect 25-0 against DePauw all-time as their winning streak dates all the way back to 1991 with the Eagles having not dropped an individual match against the Tigers since the 2015 season. The Eagles are a stellar 49-12 against the Sewanee Tigers all-time which includes a current 21-match winning streak that dates all the way back to 2008. In the Eagles most recent match they swept SCAD Atlanta 9-0 on the Woodruff PE Center indoor courts with Goetz picking up wins in both her singles and doubles matches and Shulman winning her singles match 6-4, 4-6, 12-10.
