Emory Athletics Weekly Preview: August 28th - September 4th

The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for August 28th – September 2nd. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

 

Men's Soccer:

The Emory Men's Soccer team will kick off their season at home in the Sonny Carter Invitational with contests against Covenant College as well as Washington & Lee University. Head Coach Cory Greiner returns for his seventh season leading the Eagles. Emory looks to build on a strong finish to last season, where the Eagles finished 2-2-1 in their final five contests. 2022 First-Team All-UAA selection Alejandro Gomez will also return for his fifth year with the Eagles. Gomez led the team in goals, assists, and points in 2022 and will look to start the year strong in the Sonny Carter Invitational this weekend.

Men's Cross Country:

The Emory Men's Cross Country team will start their season at the Stan Sims Opener hosted by Kennesaw State University. The Eagles, led by Head Coach Linh Nguyen, enter the season ranked No. 26 in the USTFCCCA Preseason Rankings. 2022 was a historic year for Emory, winning the program's first UAA Championship and finished top three in all but one meet. The Eagles finished 21st in the NCAA DIII Championships after securing an automatic bid to the competition.

Women's Cross Country:

Emory's Women's Cross Country team will also be traveling to Acworth, Georgia, to participate in the Stan Sims Opener. Head Coach Linh Nguyen led the Eagles to a fourth place finish in the UAA and 25th place finish at the NCAA DIII Championships in 2022. The Eagles enter the season ranked No. 19 in the USTFCCCA Preseason Rankings. Nguyen returns sophomore Luna McCauley, who emerged as a top runner for the Eagles in her first year with the program. Emory had seven All-South/Southeast Region runners in 2022 and will look to build on that number this year.

Volleyball:

The Emory Volleyball team starts their season with the Jenny McDowell Invitational. The Eagles will play host to Centre College, Greensboro College, and East Texas Baptist University over the course of the weekend. The Eagles enter the season ranked No. 13 in the AVCA/TARAFLEX rankings, looking to build upon another UAA Title and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2022. Head Coach Brianna Jones enters her first full season at the helm after spending the previous two years at Stevens Institute of Technology. Jones has several returning players from the 2022 Championship team, including senior Carly Wallace. Wallace, a Second-Team All-UAA and Third Team AVCA All-America selection, will hope to build on 2022, a year in which she led the team in kills with 315.

Women's Soccer:

The Emory Women's Soccer Team will open their season against Piedmont this weekend. The Eagles had a strong 2022, reaching the Sweet 16 in the NCAA DIII Tournament. Emory boasted a 13-5-1 record, the fourth consecutive season with 12 or more wins under Head Coach Sue Patberg's leadership. Patberg returns Kylie Hall, who set a program record in total assists with 16 while racking up an impressive 34 points over the course of the 2022 season. Hall is one of four All-Region selections returning for Patberg, joining sophomore Riley Miller, graduate student Mara Rodriguez, and junior Grace Reyer.

Women's Golf:

The Emory Women's Golf Team will to Granville, Ohio for the Barclay/Schweizer Denison Invitational this weekend. The Eagles won five tournaments last season, winning the UAA Championship for the second year in a row. Emory finished fifth in the NCAA DIII Tournament. This is Head Coach Liz Fernandes' first season at the helm leading the Eagles. Fernandes inherits the stellar junior duo of Sharon Mun and Ellen Dong. Mun and Dong both finished with a stroke average under 76 in 2022 and will look to lead the Eagles in their UAA Title defense this year.
