Five Eagles Collect UAA Athlete of the Week Honors

Five Emory Eagles were honored as University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week as announced by the conference Monday afternoon.

Senior Peter Wagner from men's soccer snared his third weekly award this season while junior Deborah Hong from volleyball picked up her second. A trio of Eagles also added their first for 2023-24 with Nolan Shah and Dean Kamenev from men's tennis and senior Jackson Klutznick from men's golf earning AOW honors.

Klutznick strung together Emory's best performance from a men's golfer in history at the Gate City Invitational early last week. Klutznick shot a 197 (-16) over three rounds to win the individual title by 11 strokes. His final round was a record-breaking one, as he shot the lowest round in Emory's history with 61 strokes (-10), including a hole-in-one to start the back-nine. His performance led the Eagles to the overall team championship, winning the tournament by a convincing 16 strokes.

Wagner allowed just one goal across 270 minutes to go along with 18 saves as the 19th-ranked men's soccer team went 3-0 this week against non-conference foes Birmingham-Southern, Brevard and Sewanee. Wagner made a career-high nine saves in the win over BSC to start the week before adding four stops against the Tornadoes and five saves in another clean sheet Sunday against the Tigers. For the season, Wagner has six wins and five shutouts while posting a 0.44 GAA and 45 total saves.

Hong had another impressive weekend as a libero recording 54 digs over three matches. She played in all twelve sets for Emory averaging 4.50 digs per set and 5.20 per set against Carnegie Mellon. She posted 26 digs on Sunday against Carnegie, the third best of her career. She notched 19 digs on Saturday against Rochester adding to her total on the weekend.

Shah and Kamenev became the latest Eagles to collect ITA regional hardware, as the duo ripped off five wins to claim the ITA South Regional doubles title, dropping just two sets along the way. The two knocked off the No. 1 seeded team out of Sewanee in the championship match. The Emory pair also advanced far in the singles draw with the tandem squaring off in the semifinals. Kamenev won the head-to-head bout and finished as the competition's runner-up.
