Seven Eagles Earn UAA Athlete of the Week Honors

Seven Emory University Eagles were tabbed as University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.

Junior Tony Li of men's golf, freshman Emily Woodall of women's soccer and senior Alejandro Gomez of men's soccer take home the honor for the first time in their career. Sophomore Dean Kamenev earns his third weekly award, his second of the season and sophomore Ren Watt of swimming and diving earns her first award as an Eagle. Seniors Alex York and Nicholas Goudie of swimming and diving both take their first weekly award of the season, the first of York's career and the fifth of Goudie's.

Li played a pivotal role in the Eagles' comeback win to claim the Tartan Invitational Title. Li shot a 71 (-1) on the final day of the tournament to climb eight spots on the leaderboard and win the individual title. Li battled through a tough start to his final round with an incredible back nine, where he shot five under par with three birdies and an eagle to win the title by one stroke. As a team, the Eagles shot an 888 (+24), finishing four strokes ahead of Methodist University to win the team title as well.

Woodall recorded her first career brace as the Eagles played #2 Carnegie Mellon to a 3-3 tie in a Saturday afternoon thriller in Atlanta. Woodall scored Emory's second and third goals of the frantic second half, giving the Eagles a 3-1 lead at the time. For the season, Woodall now ranks second on the team with four goals and is fourth with eight points.

Gomez scored twice and added an assist as the No. 3 ranked Eagles went 1-0-1 against Oglethorpe and Carnegie Mellon. Gomez began the comeback on Tuesday, scoring in the late stages of the first half to help Emory tie crosstown rival OU 2-2. Then on Saturday, Gomez notched the game-tying goal before assisting on the game-winner as the Eagles came-from-behind to down the Tartans 2-1 at home.

Kamenev had an impressive weekend at the ITA Cup in both the singles and doubles draws. Kamenev earned an at-large bid to the singles draw and made the most of his opportunity. He dethroned the No. 1 seed and defending ITA Cup singles champion in the opening round and took down the No. 4 seed as well in his journey to the Singles Finals. Kamenev fell just short in his quest to win the ITA Cup Singles, falling to the No. 2 seed, Jordan Theron, in the finals in two sets. Kamenev also reached the finals in the doubles draw, partnered with senior Nolan Shah. The duo ripped through the doubles draw, before falling in the finals match in two sets.

Watt was the Eagles' top female diver Friday afternoon as Emory was pitted in the pool against Georgia Tech. Watt turned in scores of 277.20 (1-meter) and 287.18 (3-meter) as the Eagles fell in the dual meet.

Goudie was part of two Emory wins Friday afternoon as the Eagles battled Georgia Tech in the pool. Goudie threw down a 21.05 (.01 off his time from the previous week that ranks third in DIII) to win the 50 Freestyle and swam anchor as the Eagles closed out the meet with a win in the 200 Freestyle Relay at 1:22.96. Goudie added a fifth place effort in the 100 Freestyle (46.50) and was anchor on Emory's leading 400 Medley Relay that finished second with a time of 3:19.90 (fastest so far in DIII). York represented the Eagles on the diving boards at the meet. As the lone Eagle in action, York registered scores of 248.63 on the 1-meter and 250.73 on the 3-meter.
