Three Student-Athletes Chosen as UAA Athletes of the Week

Three Emory University student-athletes were chosen as University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week for the week of April 1-7 as announced by the league office on Monday.

Senior Spencer Watry of track and field and junior Eliza McPherron of women's tennis both earn their third career honor and first during the 2024 season while senior Jacob Grossman of baseball picks up his first career honor. 

Grossman went 7-for-15 with six extra base hits to help Emory split a road UAA series at NYU. Grossman collected five doubles and one home run as he hit .467 to go along with a 1.000 slugging %, .579 on-base percentage and scored eight times. Grossman opened the series with his first four-hit game of the season, going 4-for-5 with three doubles, two RBI and four runs scored as Emory won 14-4. In the Eagles' other win over the weekend, he went 2-for-4 with another double and his second HR as Emory won 13-7. Grossman added four walks in the series and stole two bases. 

McPherron had one of her best weekends this spring season helping the Eagles go 3-0 on the weekend. She went 3-0 in doubles with her partner Iris Berman with their wins over No. 15 Babson (8-5), Piedmont (8-0) and No. 12 Trinity (8-7). On Friday against Babson, McPherron took her match with a 6-3, 6-2 decision followed by a 6-0, 6-0 win on Saturday at Piedmont. She clinched the match for the Eagles on Sunday against Trinity with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 victory in the No. 6 spot.

Watry marked his name in the Emory history books on Saturday afternoon breaking yet another program record. Watry took home second place in the 800m running a time of 1:50.19 to break the record. His time ranks first in both the UAA and Division III this season.
