The Emory University baseball team battled back from a 4-0
deficit to force extra innings against Case Western Reserve
University, but a pair of runs in the 10th inning from
the Spartans were enough to defeat the Eagles 7-5 at the University
Athletic Association (UAA) Tournament.
Trailing by two, 5-3, heading into the bottom of the eighth, a one
out double for pinch hitter Scott Schwartz put the
game-tying runners in scoring position with nobody out for freshman
catcher J.B. Smith. Smith would double to
straight away centerfield to tie the game at five runs apiece, and
eventually send the game into extra innings.
The Eagles, however, would be unable to complete the comeback, as
senior Zeb Heidt was charged with two runs in the
10th inning and the loss in the contest, falling to 1-1
on the season.
Emory players hit three solo home runs during the contest,
including one from junior Patrick Riebsame, who
matched the tournament record with three home runs during the
week. Sophomore Jonathan Reilly and junior
Andrew Cohn would hit their first and second home
runs of the season, respectively, during the contest as well.
Senior Brian Cournoyer pitched well in relief for
the Eagles, going four and a third scoreless innings in relief of
freshman starter Caleb Long. Cournoyer
lowered his season ERA to 1.90 in 23.2 innings of work this
season. Case reliever Zach Fry would earn
the win, improving to 2-1 on the season.
The loss drops Emory to 9-8 on the season, including a 2-3 mark in
UAA play, while Case improved to 5-6 overall and 3-1 in conference
games.
Emory will be back in action tomorrow for the final day of the UAA
Tournament, playing a 1:00 PM game against Brandeis University.
