Emory University’s Marc Terranova hit a
first inning grand slam, but the Eagles’ bats would go quiet
the rest of the game, as the team fell to DePauw University 9-4 at
Chappell Park on Tuesday.
With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the first
inning, Terranova hit a 2-0 pitch deep over the left-center field
wall to put Emory up 4-0 at the time. The home run was the
first of the season for the senior designated hitter, after
spending most of the year as a pitcher for the Eagles.
DePauw’s starting pitcher, Elliott Ross,
would keep Emory’s bats shut down the rest of the game
though, at one point retiring 17 consecutive batters he face.
Ross pitched into the eighth inning of the game, allowing just four
Emory hits.
Meanwhile, the DePauw bats went to work, scoring five runs, four of
which were earned, off Emory starter Matthew
Katten in the fourth inning, and two more off Katten in
the seventh. Katten took the loss on the day, falling to 3-2
on the year.
Down 8-4 at the time, the Eagles would threaten in the bottom of
the eighth, loading the bases with one out. However, with the
tying run at the plate, Jonathan Reilly struck out
swinging and Dan Molnar popped out to end the
threat.
The loss marks the fourth in the last five games for Emory, and
drops the Eagles back down to .500 on the season with a 10-10
record. DePauw improved to 10-7 on the year with the win.
Emory will look to rebound tomorrow, as the team will travel to
Sewanee, TN to face the University of the South at 3:00 PM EST.
