Emory Baseball Sweeps York at Rawlings Southern Classic

Emory Baseball Sweeps York at Rawlings Southern Classic

The Emory University baseball team won back-to-back games for the first time in 2010, sweeping a doubleheader against York (Pa.) College with an 11-0 win in the first game and a 9-4 victory in the second, at the Rawlings Southern Classic.

In the opening contest, Emory earned its first shutout win since an 11-0 win over Centre College on March 24th, 2009.  Emory starting pitcher Matthew Katten pitched seven innings of shutout baseball, allowing seven hits and two walks while striking out two batters.  Katten improved to 1-1 on the season, lowering his ERA to 2.28.

Paul Schwendel and Connor McGuiness each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the contest.

At the plate, senior Dan Molnar hit his first home run of the season, a two run shot over the right field wall, and finished the game two-for-two with two walks and two RBIs, while junior catcher Matt Fennell was two-for-two with three RBIs.   Blake Pindyck, Ryan Jones, Evan Plys, and Scott Schwartz also had multiple-hit games.

In the second contest, the Eagles took advantage of a four run second inning to take the lead over York.  After starting pitcher Chris Monaco was pulled from the contest in the second inning, senior Brian Cournoyer earned the victory with five and two thirds innings of five-hit baseball, allowing two unearned runs and striking out two.  Cournoyer is now 2-0 this season with a 0.00 ERA in 14 and two thirds innings out of the bullpen.

Molnar continued his strong day at the plate in the second game, going two-for-four with two doubles and two RBIs.  Molnar also matched the school record with the 116th walk of his Emory career.

Sophomore Kevin O'Connor and junior Jeremy Bolian each added multiple RBI games for Emory as well, while Ryan Jones went two-for-five to raise his team-leading batting average to .412.

The Eagles, now 4-5 this season, will try to get back to .500 tomorrow, facing LaGrange College at Chappell Park for the final game of the Rawlings Southern Classic at 2:00 PM.
