Baseball Drops 5-2 Game to Centre College

Baseball Drops 5-2 Game to Centre College

Emory University senior Andrew Cohn drove in a pair of runs, but it was all the offense the Eagles would produce in the game, as the baseball team fell 5-2 to Centre College on Wednesday at Chappell Park.

The loss drops Emory’s record to 15-9 on the season, while Centre improved to 7-13 on the year with the win.

Centre jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the game with an unearned run on an RBI groundout, but the Eagles would answer back in the bottom of the frame on Cohn’s first RBI single of the day.

After a solo home run from starting pitcher Cory Crowdis put Centre up 2-1 in the third, Emory responded again, as Cohn singled in Andrew DeYoung on a fielder’s choice to knot the game at two runs apiece.

The Eagles bats would go quiet after scoring the second run, picking up just three hits the rest of the game.  Meanwhile, the Colonels scored the go-ahead run in the fourth inning, and two more insurance runs in the seventh, to secure the victory.

Emory threatened in the sixth inning, as sophomore Daniel Iturrey tripled high off the right centerfield wall, narrowly missing a home run that would have tied the game at three.  However, he was stranded at third to end the inning.

The Eagles also got the tying run to the plate in the eighth inning, after back-to-back two out singles from Patrick Riebsame and Jonathan Reilly, but would be unable to score either runner.

Freshman Brandon Hannon ended the day 0-for-2, as his 11-game hitting streak came to a close.  Meanwhile, Riebsame extended his hitting streak to 11 games, matching Hannon and Reilly for the longest this season by an Eagle.

Starting pitcher Matt McMahon took the loss for Emory, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits over four innings pitched, dropping to 2-2 on the year.  Andy Hagerman earned the win for Centre to improve to 2-1 on the season, while Adam Hoyt notched his third save of the campaign.

The Eagles will try to rebound on Friday, as Emory will open a three-game home-away-home series against Piedmont College, hosting the Lions at 3:00 PM.
