The Emory University baseball team used another big inning on Sunday, this time a five-run seventh, to complete the three-game sweep of Hendrix College, winning 8-4 at Chappell Park.

The victory was the fourth-straight for the Eagles and their sixth win in their last seven games, as Emory improved to 21-10 overall on the season.  Hendrix fell below .500 to 13-14 on the campaign with the loss.

Starting pitcher Caleb Long pitched seven innings for Emory, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks, while striking out seven batters.  The sophomore improved to 5-0 on the season through five appearances, and ended the game with a 2.08 earned run average.

After Long matched scoreless inning with Hendrix starter Will Harris through the first two and a half frames, Emory broke through against the freshman in the bottom of the third.  The Eagles loaded the bases with one out, and sophomore Daniel Iturrey drove in two runs with a single.  Emory added a third run in the inning when Brandon Hannon scored on a wild pitch.

However, Harris would regain his composure, getting out of the inning with the bases loaded, and keeping Emory off the board over the next three innings.

Meanwhile, the Warriors would begin their comeback in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs, and had the potential to add more in the inning, if not for Hannon’s seventh outfield assist of the season, as the freshman threw out a runner at the plate for the second out of the inning.  Trailing 3-2 heading into the fifth, Hendrix scored two more runs on a two-out single up the middle from Kyle Raskin, taking a 4-3 lead over the Eagles.

Emory would continue to trail by a run until the bottom of the seventh.  With one out and runners on the corners, Jonathan Reilly doubled in both runners to give the Eagles a 5-4 lead.  Emory added on to the lead with RBI singles from Patrick Riebsame and Jay Page, and a sacrifice fly from Gabe Shivers.

Long would leave the game with the lead after seven innings to earn the victory.  Freshman Matt McMahon pitched two scoreless innings to close out the game for Emory.

Iturrey and Reilly each had two RBIs during the game for Emory, while Hannon and Andrew Cohn each added two hit performances at the plate.

The Eagles will now look ahead to a key regional matchup on Tuesday, as Emory will travel to Maryville College (Tenn.) for a 4:00 PM EST game.
