Emory Ends Rhodes College Classic with 9-2 Loss to #12 Marietta

The Emory University baseball team suffered its third-straight loss at the Rhodes College Classic on Sunday, falling to 12th-ranked Marietta College 9-2 in Memphis, TN.

The Eagles remained winless on the road this season with a 0-4 record away from Chappell Park, and falling to 7-4 overall on the campaign.  Marietta improved to 3-0 on the season with the victory.

Emory starter Chris Monaco took the loss for the Eagles, after allowing just one hit through an inning and a third, but walking four batters and hitting three others, and leaving in the top of the second inning trailing 2-0 with the bases loaded.  Freshman Matt McMahon entered the game, allowing a two-run double before getting out of the inning.

The Pioneers added four more runs, two earned, off McMahon in the top of the sixth, and another in the top of the seventh off sophomore Mike Bitanga, taking a 9-0 lead over Emory.

The Eagles would get on the board in the bottom of the eighth, after freshman Brandon Hannon reached on an error, eventually scoring on a single for junior Kevin O’Connor, the eighth RBI of the season for the second baseman.  Emory added on another run in the ninth, as sophomore Maxim Sankey picked up his first collegiate hit and RBI, driving in Evan Plys who had a pinch-hit single earlier in the inning.

Senior third baseman Andrew Cohn picked up a pair of hits for Emory in the game, going two-for-four.  Junior shortstop Jonathan Reilly and senior leftfielder Patrick Riebsame each added hits for the Eagles as well.

The loss was the first of the season for Monaco, who fell to 2-1 on the season.  Starter Brian Gasser earned the win for the Pioneers in his season debut, allowing just two hits and two walks, while striking out five Emory batters over six innings.

The Eagles will look to rebound next week, as Emory will face Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL on Wednesday at 5:00 PM EST.
