Eagles Drop 5-1 Decision to Maryville at the Rhodes College Classic

Eagles Drop 5-1 Decision to Maryville at the Rhodes College Classic

The Emory University baseball team dropped its second-consecutive game, falling 5-1 to Maryville College (Tenn.) in the team’s second game at the Rhodes College Classic in Memphis, TN on Saturday.

The dropped the Eagles’ record to 7-3 on the campaign, with all three losses coming on the road, while Maryville improved to 7-3 on the season with the victory.

Emory fell behind after one inning for the fourth-straight game.  With one out in the frame, Nic Baker singled for the Scots, later stealing second and third, and scoring on an error by the Eagles’ catcher, freshman Jared Welch, to give Maryville a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles would remain behind by one until the top of the fifth inning.  After senior first baseman Ryan Jones and junior designated hitter Jay Page each reached on errors to put runners on the corners with one out, Welch drove in his eighth run of the season to knot the score at a run apiece.  The Eagles would leave the two runners on first and second to end the inning.

Emory starter Ben Hinojosa settled in on the mound, allowing just three hits during his six innings of work.  However, in the bottom of the sixth, the freshman walked the leadoff hitter and then surrendered a RBI triple to Myles Cordell to give the Scots the lead.  Cordell would later score Maryville’s third run of the game on a wild pitch, giving the Scots a 3-1 lead after six innings.

The Scots added on another pair in the bottom of the seventh off Emory freshman reliever Jason Edwards, on a bases loaded single and a hit by pitch.  With the bases loaded and one out in the inning, junior Ryan Orlovsky came on to pitch for the Eagles, and limited the damage by inducing a double play ground ball to end the frame.  Orlovsky would also induce an inning-ending double play in the eighth, but it would be too little too late for the Eagles.

Hinojosa took the loss for Emory, falling to 1-1 on the campaign, while Maryville starter Robert Brown earned the complete-game victory to improve to 1-2 on the season.

The Eagles will wrap up their three-game stint at the Rhodes College Classic tomorrow, facing 12th-ranked Marietta College at 11:30 AM EST.
