Eagles Split Doubleheader at Hendrix College

Eagles Split Doubleheader at Hendrix College

The Emory University Baseball team split a doubleheader with Hendrix College on Saturday in Conway, Arkansas, falling 2-1 in the early contest before bouncing back to win the late game, a seven-inning affair, 11-4.

With the split, Emory remained a game above .500 for the season with a 14-13 overall record.  Hendrix now stands at 15-16 for the season.

The early game was a tightly-contested affair.  Emory jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning, when junior shortstop Jared Kahn singled, stole second, and scored on a two-out single from junior Jared Welch, the 100th hit of the catcher's career.  Hendrix picked up a run of its own off Emory freshman starter Tyler Sprague in the fourth, and the score remained 1-1 until the bottom of the eighth inning, when the Warriors scored the go-ahead run on a bases-loaded walk with two outs.

Sprague pitched five innings, allowing just one run on seven hits in the no-decision.  Junior Matt McMahon took the loss, falling to 2-3 despite allowing just one hit over three innings of work.  Sophomore West Peacock picked up two of Emory's four hits in the game.

After falling behind 2-0 in the late game, the Eagles' bats took over with an 11-run, 10-hit attack to pave the way to victory.  Leading the way was Kahn, who went three-for-four with a double and two triples, driving in three runs and scoring three of his own.  Junior Daniel Iturrey added two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored, while junior Brandon Hannon drove in a pair of runs as well.

On the mound, freshman Paul Merolla started and picked up the win, improving to 3-1 on the year after scattering nine hits over five innings and surrendering just four runs.  Both junior Robert Gross and sophomore Michael Byman pitched scoreless innings in relief to close out the win.

The two teams will wrap-up their weekend series with a nine-inning game on Sunday, starting at 1:00 PM.  There will be video, but no live statistics, for the contest.
