Emory Baseball Falls to Piedmont in Season Finale

Emory Baseball Falls to Piedmont in Season Finale

The Emory University Baseball team tried for a late rally in its final at bat of the 2013 campaign, but ultimately fell 3-2 to Piedmont College at Chappell Park on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore starter Connor Dillman delivered eight strong innings for the Eagles, allowing just three runs (two earned) on six hits, but was saddled with a tough-luck loss, ended his season with a 4-4 record and a 2.20 ERA.

Emory took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a two-strike, two-out single by Jared Welch, scoring Daniel Iturrey from third base.  However, the Eagles left nine men on base through the first four innings, and Piedmont took advantage with solo runs off Dillman in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, after the right-handed pitcher retired the first 10 batters he faced in the game.

Emory's bats would remain quiet until the bottom of the ninth inning.  Trailing 3-1, pinch hitter Chris Slivka was hit by a pitch, and senior Mark Lindemann followed with a base hit in the next at bat.

Lindemann, the lone senior on the Emory roster, was lifted from the game for a pinch runner, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd and his teammates after his final appearance as an Eagle.

Jared Kahn would single to right field in the next at bat, loading the bases with nobody out.  After Piedmont closer Jacob Brewster struck out a batter for the first out of the inning, Wes Peacock drove in a run on a groundout, cutting the deficit to 3-2, and moving the tying and go-ahead runs into scoring position.  However, Brewster intentionally walked Iturrey, and struck out the next batter to end the game and earn his ninth save of the season.

Matt Lisk started and earned the win for Piedmont, ending his year with a 4-6 record.  The Lions completed the campaign with a 22-22 overall record.

Brandon Hannon and Welch each had a pair of hits in the game to lead the Emory offense.

The game concludes the 2013 campaign for the Eagles.
