Emory Baseball Begins LaGrange Series with Saturday Split

The Emory University baseball team split a pair of games with LaGrange College Saturday afternoon as the two teams began a three-game series in at Clevelander Field in LaGrange, GA.

The Eagles opened the series with a two-run victory, taking game one by a 5-3 margin. In the second contest, the Panthers were able to even the series, capitalizing on early scoring and eventually winning 11-8.

Game 1 – Emory 5, LaGrange 3

Strong pitching was the story in the series opener as Jack Brodsky along with Dylan Kahn and Aaron Mishoulam shut down the Panthers offense, striking out a combined 12 batters.

Brodsky earned the victory to move to 1-1 as he gave up two runs on three hits in six innings of work as he punched out eight in the contest. Mishoulam was dominant in his season debut to collect his first save of the year, striking out four in his two shutout innings. LaGrange did bring the go-ahead run to the plate with two outs in the ninth but the sophomore was able to escape any damage, sending down Rhett Hebert for the final out on a grounder to short.

Leading 3-2, the Eagles were able to push across two more runs in the later stages of the game. Henry Pelinski delivered an RBI single in the sixth, scoring Ryan Adelman. In the seventh, Steven Hunt scampered home on a wild pitch as Caleb Shulman drew a walk.

Michael Edelman collected two hits for the visitors to go along with an RBI, walk and two stolen bases to lead the Emory offense.

Game 2 – LaGrange 11, Emory 8

The Panthers were the early aggressors in the night cap, scoring nine times over the first three innings as they were able to build a 9-5 advantage and never looked back.

Starter Jack Moore lasted just 2.1 innings as he surrendered nine runs (seven earned) on 12 hits in his second starting assignment of the year. Kyle Sulkowski was strong in his season debut, following Moore and tossing 2.2 scoreless frames while striking out four and not walking a batter.

Five different Eagles in the lineup put forth multi-hit outings with Jack Rubenstein cashing in with three RBI as he went 2-for-5 with a double. Adding two hit efforts for Emory were Shulman (2-for-5), Tyler McLoughlin (2-for-3, RBI), David Shore (2-for-4, double) and Hunt (2-for-4).

Robby Wacker went 1-for-5 and had a run-scoring double in the Eagles' three-run seventh as the team tried to inch closer to the deficit.

The two teams will conclude the weekend series with game three Sunday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 PM.
