Emory Baseball Splits Monday Doubleheader at Maryville

The Emory University baseball team split a doubleheader on the road at Maryville College Monday afternoon. The Eagles took care of business in the first game, winning 9-2, before losing a lead late in game two to fall by a count of 3-2.

Game 1 – Emory 9, Maryville 2

Jack Brodsky and Joey Bock teamed up to limit the Scots to just two runs over nine frames while the Emory offense racked up nine runs on 12 hits.

Brodsky went the first five innings, giving up two runs in the final inning of work as he improved to 2-0 on the season. Bock was once again superb, spinning four hitless innings and collecting five strikeouts as he earned the save.

Zeke Diamond led both teams with a three-hit performance, going 3-for-3 with two RBI, a walk and a run scored. Caleb Shulman and Robby Wacker each had two hits and one RBI for the Eagles. The trio helped start the scoring, breaking a scoreless ballgame in the top half of the third. Shulman had a bases loaded single before Wacker followed with a walk and Diamond with a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded.

With the score 3-2, Emory took advantage of two Maryville throwing errors in the eighth inning, leading the visitors to a four-run frame. Jack Masonis and Jake Kessinger both had RBI hits to extend the team's lead to five at 7-2. The Eagles rounded out the scoring in the ninth as Jacob Singer scored on a wild pitch before Diamond brought home Ryan Adelman with an infield single.

Game 2 – Maryville 3, Emory 2 (7 innings)

The Scots rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth to erase a 2-0 deficit and earn the doubleheader split in a seven-inning affair.

After shutting down the Maryville bats through his first five innings, starter Jack Moore ran into trouble in the sixth. The Scots had three straight hits to begin the inning with Gabe Lopez putting the home team on the board with run-scoring single through the right side. Jimmy Meredith tied the game with RBI groundout before Jack Shuttleworth gave Maryville the lead with a sac fly.

Moore's final line was three runs on five hits in 5.1 innings. He struck out two and did not issue a walk.

Both the Eagles' runs came in the fourth inning as Diamond and Singer had back-to-back runs batted in. Singer was one of two Emory batters with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3. Shulman picked up two hits as well, finishing 2-for-4 with a run score.

Emory is back on the field next Tuesday, April 6th, as they take on Piedmont College for the second time in 2021. The game will be played at Chappell Park in Atlanta however no spectators, including family members, will be permitted as announced by the University's release Monday afternoon. It will be the first home event for Emory Athletics since returning to competition earlier this month.
