Emory Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader with Covenant

The Emory University baseball team split games in its doubleheader against the Covenant Scots on Saturday afternoon at Chappell Park.

The Eagles dropped the first game of the double dip by a score of 13-4. Junior Henry Pelinski has been on fire to start the season going 2-of-4 at the plate, including a two-run heater over the right field fence in the fourth inning. Senior Jack Brodsky drew his first start of the season and lasted three innings as he allowed five earned runs on three hits. The Eagles found themselves trailing 6-0 after the top of the third inning and just couldn't slow down Scots offense for the rest of game one.

In the seven inning second game of the twinbill, the Eagles got cooking as they recorded their third game with 10 or more runs, collecting 12 runs on 11 hits to win rubber game of the series 12-1.

The Eagles got on the board early, with Ellis Schwartz stealing two bases in the first inning to set himself up to score off of a wild pitch. Emory followed up its performance in the first inning with a four-run second highlighted by four more thefts on the base paths, two of which came from sophomore Jacob Grossman that set him up to be brought home off a sacrifice fly from teammate Jonah Wronski.

In total the Eagles finished the game with a total of eight steals from six different players. Emory would continue to widen the gap in the third and fourth frames, scoring another six runs between the two.

Senior Robby Wacker had a standout game as he went 2-for-3 with one RBI as well as crossing the plate three times himself over the course of the game. The Scots would score a run in the final innings to prevent the Eagles from earning their first shutout of the year but for the bulk of the game they were unable to solve Emory's pitching staff. Sophomore Tyler McLoughlin earned the win in his first-ever collegiate start, allowing two hits and striking out seven in his four innings of action.

The Eagles move to 3-1 on the season with the Saturday split, having scored 43 runs over their first four games and will take the field again this Friday at 2:00 PM in the first of a three-game weekend series at Chappell Park against Claremont Mudd-Scripps.
