Emory Baseball Bounces Back with Doubleheader Sweep at Oglethorpe

The Emory University baseball team bounced back in a big way Sunday afternoon, taking both games of the doubleheader to win the series against crosstown rival Oglethorpe University.

With the Sunday sweep, the Eagles improve to 13-8 whereas the Stormy Petrels fall to 8-11.

Next up for Emory will be the start of University Athletic Association competition as Case Western Reserve visits Atlanta for a four-game set beginning Friday afternoon at Chappell Park.

Game 1 – Emory 13, Oglethorpe 6

The Eagles offense was clicking in the first game of the afternoon, racking up 13 runs on 14 hits and drawing a season-high 11 base-on-balls. Emory scored in five of the nine innings including four runs in both the fifth and ninth frames.

Eight of the nine starters had at least one hit and eight different players reached base via a walk in the seven-run win.

Sophomore Jacob Grossman finished a home run shy of the cycle as he was one of two players to register a three-hit game. Senior Zeke Diamond had three base hits including a double and drove in a team-best three runs. Junior Henry Pelinski went 1-for-1 with a team-high three walks and drove in two runs with his single as part of Emory's three-run third inning.

On the mound, senior Joey Bock moved to 2-1 as he allowed two earned runs over five innings and struck out five. Sophomore Tyler McLoughlin was tremendous in relief as he made his first appearance on the mound in a couple weeks. McLoughlin struck out seven over four innings to earn his first career save, giving up one run on two hits and a walk.

Game 2 – Emory 4, Oglethorpe 0 (7 innings)

A four-run first inning was the difference as the Eagles won the series finale.

Emory took advantage of three OU errors and two wild pitches in the opening inning to put a crooked number on the board. The Eagles recorded just one hit in the inning with Jack Halloran picking up a RBI-single.

The real story in the contest was the performance of the Emory pitching staff. Starter Jack Brodsky and relievers Dylan Kahn and Aaron Mishoulam combined for the first team shutout of the season, allowing one hit across the seven frames.

Brodsky earned his first win on the mound in 2022, firing five innings of one-hit ball with two walks and two strikeouts, before Kahn and Mishoulman retired all six batters they faced in the final two innings. Following a leadoff single to start the second, Emory pitching sent down 18 of the final 19 Oglethorpe batters that stepped to the plate.
