Emory Baseball Drops Two to Case Western Reserve

Case Western Reserve University took both games of the doubleheader from the Emory University baseball team Saturday afternoon at Chappell Park in Atlanta.

After winning the series opener on Friday, the Eagles could not return to the win column in games two and three as the Spartans were 5-4 and 11-4 winners. Emory now sits 14-10 overall and 1-2 inside the UAA while CWRU upped its record to 8-10 and 2-1 in conference play.

The two teams will conclude the weekend series Sunday afternoon with first pitch of the finale scheduled for 12:00 PM at the Chap.

Game 1 – CWRU 5, Emory 4

The Eagles got out to a 4-3 advantage through the first five frames before seeing a seventh inning rally by the Spartans give the win to the visitors.

Freshman Brok Liu delivered his second home run of the series with a two-run shot in the fifth, putting Emory ahead by one. Previously, senior Zeke Diamond plated Ellis Schwartz with a two-out single in the first for the game's first run before freshman Jack Halloran made it a 3-2 in the fourth, scoring Schwartz on a fielder's choice.

Senior Joey Bock pitched well as he was saddled with a no decision, tossing six innings of three-run ball to go along with two strikeouts.

Strong pitching by CWRU relievers Kyle Gearding and Tyler Horvath kept Emory off the scoreboard for the final four frames including Horvath escaping a bases-loaded jam in the seventh.

Game 2 – CWRU 11, Emory 4

The Spartans scored in six of the nine innings, headlined by three-run frames in both the fourth and eighth, en route to scoring 11 runs on 12 hits to sweep the doubleheader from the Eagles.

Emory recorded all four of its runs within the first four innings, highlighted by a game-tying two-run single by Josh Katz in the fourth.

Senior Jack Brodsky fell to 1-3 on the bump as he pitched into the sixth, allowing seven runs (4 ER). He struck out six and did not walk a batter.

More solid relief pitching from CWRU was the difference in the later innings as Sankalp Doshi and Andrew Allen combined to spin 5.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out eight.
