Emory Baseball Sweeps Saturday Twinbill with Oglethorpe

The Emory University baseball team opened its weekend series against crosstown rival Oglethorpe on Saturday, sweeping doubleheader action at Chappell Park.

The Eagles racked up 17 runs on 23 hits in the twinbill sweep to improve to 3-2 while the Stormy Petrels fell to 0-7. The two teams will conclude their season series on Sunday with the finale set to begin at 1:00 PM on Emory's campus.

Game 1 – Emory 6, Oglethorpe 3

Junior Derek Livingston fired four shutout innings of one-run ball, facing one over the minimum and striking out five to earn the win in relief. Senior Ellis Schwartz went 3-for-4 with three RBI as part of his five RBI day.

A three-run fifth was the turning point as Schwartz and senior Tyler McLoughlin brought home three runs in the frame including the go-ahead two-run single by McLoughlin that put the Eagles ahead for good.

Livingston and McLoughlin was outstanding in relief, holding the Stormy Petrels scoreless from the fourth inning on. McLoughlin picked up his second save of the season, striking out the side in his one dominant inning of work.

Game 2 – Emory 11, Oglethorpe 6

A four spot in the third inning pushed Oglethorpe ahead 4-1 but 10 unanswered runs was the difference as Emory ran its season record against OU to 3-0.

Sophomore Ryan Reynolds earned the win, working five innings of work with his third frame being the only blemish. Senior Mike Golob and sophomore Ryan Kelly put up zeroes in their outings as Oglethorpe did not strike again until the ninth inning when the game was already out of reach.

Three different Eagles drove in two runs in the win, including sophomore Jack Halloran as part of his three-hit effort. McLoughlin and junior Jacob Grossman also supplied the power with a home run each. McLoughlin's towering blast started the team's four-run fourth inning with junior Walker Woolf putting the Eagles ahead for good his two-run double that plated Grossman and sophomore Josh Katz.
